Music: Pink Floyd

Submitted by Mr Phantomb on 19 June, 2004 - 6:16pm.

Any Pink Floyd fans here?

...even though their heyday was in the 70's?
....and their last album was in 1994?

I got the Pulse DVD the day it was released. Floyd are undoubtably one of the best live acts in the world. U2 can't touch them. The Floyd concerts at Earls Court which are captured on Pulse were actually perfprmed in 1994, and I don't think that they have toured since.  The lighting is simply spectacular and one could even argue that they invented the the industry laregly through efforts of Roger Waters (now not with the band. For example they were the first band to use blow-ups ane were early experimeters of moving lights (along with Genesis).  They also pushed sound quality to the limits and for many years owned Britannia Row the largest sound equipment hire company in the UK. For those who have not see Pulse you are in for a surprise. It will knock your socks off. Dark Side of the Moon has never sounded better and those thousands who managed to get tickets for the London shows were priveleged indeed. Pulse has taken years to be released by hell the wait was worth it. The video has been out for yonks but it was the DVD we wanted and not simply a CD copy of the video.

Finally!

Picked up my copy of PULSE - Pink Floyd Live at Earl's Court this morning.

This is easily the most visually stunning and musically "clean" concert of all time.

Get out of my car!!

I have it on CD \m/ I haven't listened to it for a while though ... sounds like the DVD might be worth it, I heard they were meant to put on a good light show.

1500 weeks on the Billboard Charts!

Pink Floyd's 1973 album, Dark Side of the Moon was the highest debut on the Top 200 when it entered the chart at number 98. The album stayed on the chart for 736 successive weeks before it fell out of the Top 200 in 1988. Dark Side Of The Moon has since notched up a further 765 non-consecutive weeks on the chart to hit an unprecedented 1500 weeks!

1500! whoa! yayness!  Laughing out loud

Ev 14 May, 2006 - 8:03pm

:D  Yeah well that album was way ahead of it's time - and it's now a timeless classic Laughing out loud

Watched a show on C4 last week with Pink Floyd showing the making of Dark Side - it was so brilliant - the four guys gave a track by track breakdown of how they did it all - only had black and white stills from the times - but each of them gave such intimate insights into the time - so incredible that it was all done manually - with 'loops' and suchlike giving amazing sounds.  I checked on Trademe and it's out on DVD - called Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon "NEW" and has only recently been released.  Rivetting stuff Laughing out loud

Interesting you say that Ev....coz I experienced the same thing today.

I was driving to the supermarket and on came Salt'n'Pepa's "Giddy Up"
Giddy Up baby giddy up giddy up (say what?) etc.

Then this familiar guitar solo kicks in.....and it hit me.
After enjoying the beat and flow of this song for 6 years I've actually been listening to.....

Another Brick in the Wall (Pt 2)

Ev 31 August, 2005 - 8:31pm

Heard some Pink Floyd sounds in the middle of a rap song today - wasn't really listening - then the familiar strains from a never forgotten memory made me sit bolt upright and take notice - wooooot - or is that wooooord  Laughing out loud

TAADOW 31 August, 2005 - 11:17am

WTF??

I've just listened to Echoes off Pink Floyd's 1971 album "Meddle".
And what do I hear at 6.07 into the song??
The bloody Phantom of the Opera theme!
Baaaaaa Ba-ba-ba-ba Baaaaaa ba-ba-ba-ba baaaaaa!

It's not just a passing snippet of music either. There we have it going round and round for a good half minute!

Unbelievable.

Ev 12 August, 2005 - 7:34pm

wheet - goes to get Meddle - fork can't find it - so puts on INXS Kick Laughing out loud

I bought The Wall and Roger Water's "In the Flesh" on DVD.
WOOHOO!

I had always hated Roger for some reason. I guess I felt that he was a stuck up little brat in the band...but now I'm seeing more and more genius.

It's funny you know, because a couple of years ago I got really disillusioned with music. It felt like I had heard all the good stuff (yeah right) and I was wondering what the next thing to bowl me over would be.

If Pink Floyd were releasing this music today..I wonder how the boppers would look at it?

lol, if they listen to songs such as......

brain damage, eclipse, great gig in the sky

Ev 10 August, 2005 - 7:45pm

Roger on his own gives me the creeps - he has hang ups about the last war and fathers and stuff ......*shrugs* and I find his voice reedy and irritating - my other half adoooooores him and his weirdness - but The Wall shows his strengths as a writer and without him ...... well it just isn't Pink :P  Wonder if Alaina is related to Syd ?  Sorta makes sense really - hahahaaaaaa....

Just listened to the complete Dark Side of the Moon album for the first time.

It's a masterpiece.

Forget U2. They don't come close to this.

Ev 5 August, 2005 - 3:05pm

The first time Phantie - ?  Wow - and yes it was and still is a masterpiece - the 'effects' were frontrunner stuff - real stereophonic !!!! - and they used this to perfection.  Headphones were fought over to get the most amazing sensations of crazy people in your head saying naughty things and helicopters going in one ear and out the other ....... then there was the music .... So Powerful ......the words.....So Inspiring..... the singing.... Just Awesome !

U2 are Unforgettable and I adore them - but I wouldn't see them more than once either - Pink Floyd I would walk a million miles to see hahahaa

Mr Phantomb 5 August, 2005 - 3:08pm

It's funny.
The last album that had this sort of effect on me was Marily Manson's Antichrist Superstar, which follows the same track-linking concept as DSOTM.

But this is fantastic.

*goes out to buy DSOTM....and Wish You Were Here...and The Wall....and Animals....*

Ev 5 August, 2005 - 3:28pm

Yes - do that Phantz - you won't be disappointed - we have every album they ever made - I think - though some of their real early stuff is kinda kinky and crazy - Syd Barrett was wacky hahahaa - but he was the real reason that Pink Floyd happened.  Shine on you Crazy Diamond was written for him and several other songs too - I believe he is still alive somewhere and living off royalties - totally off his rocker ....... We have one album by Syd Barrett 'The Madman Laughs.....and Barrett' - for collectable purposes only - can't play it anyway - haven't had a turntable in a looooong time:D

lostprophetsrock 21 November, 2004 - 5:36pm

bit quirky at times, but hey, that was the 70's.

66LeVi99 23 January, 2005 - 6:31pm

I love them they are the best. No one can use words like Roger Waters can.

David Gilmour is a bit pompous though, Wouldnt be Pink Floyd without him, but then there was Syd, He really was great, His songs never made sence but hey. They were great.

The wall is the best album I ever heard. I liked Pink Floyd since I could remember and they are one of my favorite rock band.

You know....Dark Side of the Moon? The Wall?

"The Wall? Nooo...
Are they a rock band? Like Good Charlotte?"

Ev 20 June, 2004 - 7:01pm

Ev knows who they are!

Fav all time concert - when I saw them at the Melbourne Tennis Centre - my insides vibrated to the most awesomest Bass - Dave Gilmore got into my head and blew my mind to another dimension!!!!!

LOOOOOOOOOOVE THEM Smiling

LexingtonSteel 20 June, 2004 - 7:02pm

How old are you Ev?

Ev 20 June, 2004 - 7:08pm

Hey - look who is asking - how old are you LS?

LexingtonSteel 20 June, 2004 - 7:10pm

Well if you will tell me your real age then I'll tell you my real age. Deal? Deal.

Ev 20 June, 2004 - 7:13pm

You first then Smiling

Ev has a good idea of your age - ya slip a lot.

LexingtonSteel 20 June, 2004 - 7:18pm

Just tell me your age Ev. I thought you were one of the little girls of this site but since your last post of fav concert of all time...

I'm finding it hard to believe that a 13 year old is that cool.

Ev 20 June, 2004 - 9:32pm

Ok LS - you're onto it - Ev is not 13 Smiling

Phantomb - That's the 2nd time you have caught Ev in your music web. Actually Ev caught you first time......hehehe:)

LexingtonSteel 21 June, 2004 - 3:05pm

As a gesture of goodwill I will now tell you my real age. In not only hope of you telling me your real age but most importantly, I do not want to keep playing this game and go in circles again...

LexingtonSteel is 24 years old.

Now it is your turn.

Ev 21 June, 2004 - 8:51pm

LMAOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Ev doesn't believe you!

P..... off ehoa!

LexingtonSteel 21 June, 2004 - 9:26pm

No no no Ev. We had a deal, remember? There is no way you can back out of it now.

Why is it so hard for you to believe that I'm 24? It is my real age, and you know this because you can feel it inside you heart that the words I'm saying is true.

C'mon Ev you got to play fair now.

LexingtonSteel 21 June, 2004 - 9:42pm

Oh Ev...

I've just found the date to the very same Pink Floyd's concert that you attended.... Many, many, many 'darkside of the moons' ago that was.

You may find it hard to believe Ev, but I'm exactly the age I say I am.

I know why you think otherwise... It was the comment about the "The Clean" that got you.

But a deal is a deal... Smiling

Ev 22 June, 2004 - 9:55am

What a shame - you would have been too young to see the Kings of rock in action.
