General: TVNZ to drop Idol

Submitted by The Critic on 16 October, 2006 - 10:32pm.

A number of sources from within TVNZ have confirmed that the state broadcaster will not be renewing NZ Idol for a fourth season. This comes despite the fact that ratings for the third season are up on season two.

The lack of interest in Idol by TVNZ could be due to the fact that up until a few weeks ago, there was no major sponsor for the series that will top the ratings for the year along side Dancing with the Stars (which is also apparently on the chopping block).

It is understood that both Fremantle and SPP are keen for a fourth season which would mean that an alternative network, TV3 or Prime, would need to come on board.

I've just come from the TVNZ 2007 Season Launch where they told everyone that "all top rating shows will be returning in 2007". Confirmed to be retuning to TV One was dancing with the stars but there was no mention of NZ Idol. I do recall this to be the same situation last year.

Yup they didn't "officialy" announce that it would be returning until the begining of february.

Well I really hope there is more to come.  Firstly for us to watch and enjoy - or complain about!Eye-wink

Also what other way is there for young people to be seen and heard by the majority of people.  A chance for them get recognition and help on their way with luck!

We get very few entertainment programmes on TV now, especially NZ talent!

Levin Chronicle Mon 30th page-1

Television New Zealand has confirmed that despite excellent ratings this year, it has made no decision about commissioning another season of NZ Idol.

The Network has an option with South Pacific Pictures for a fourth season, but it said it needed to evaluate the success of the current series before deciding

I know they've said otherwise before but are they still deciding on another? Hmmm

I am so sad! i mean i do hope TV3 takes it on not Prime cos I dont have prime.tv

TV Insider 17 October, 2006 - 9:39pm

There is absolutley no way that either TV3 or Prime will be able to come up with the $6 million it takes to make Idol, so it just won't happen.

enigma project 17 October, 2006 - 8:00pm

I think that TV3 would be more likely to choose Idol because it fits in with their younger skewing shows (people aged 18-49), while Prime would be more likely to pick up Dancing because it fits in with their older skewing shows (people aged 25-54).

In any case I think TVNZ would be making a BIG mistake if they dropped either of the shows, but they seem to be losing money lately and both shows are reasonably expensive to produce by New Zealand standards.

Chevy Chevy Chevy, you are forgetting three simple facts regarding that.

1) I was blacklisted from working on any SPP production, I hardly think that will change.

2) I was anti idol one year, like they'd really make me the host.

3) I'll be in Australia sniffing around for better opportunities.

4) I wouldn't want to be involved in mindless television like Idol. I would rather actually do the stuff like John Campbell does except with political substance.

Thats solely up to the new kid on the block TV3 (considering they pick it up)

They might have someone else in mind.

Massive FAIL!

He might want to stay loyal to TVNZ.

admin 17 October, 2006 - 1:15pm

He's presenting on TV3 for the TV awards ceremony. He's not employed by TVNZ, right?

Nellie 17 October, 2006 - 1:19pm
Massive FAIL!

Well, TVNZ pay his wage for Idol.

I can remember something going down to do with television networks and Jacqui Brown. TVNZ decided to dump her or something and she went to Canwest.

admin 17 October, 2006 - 1:20pm

Hmm I thought he was employed by SPP (see his cv)? And TVNZ buys NZ Idol off SPP?

Nellie 17 October, 2006 - 1:25pm
Massive FAIL!

But don't TVNZ pay SPP to be able to pay Dom's wage?

Either way, he's getting his money from TVNZ.

admin 17 October, 2006 - 1:27pm

Yeah, but you could say the same for all the Shortland Street actors. He's still employed/contracted with SPP.

TVNZ buys the series off SPP with advertising money. SPP pays their cast/crew.

I am sorry to hear this.  We all moan and complain, but when it comes down to it, the majority of us - and the rest of the NZ public - actually do love watching this show and seeing all the new talent!Smiling And we also love the time here when it's on, talking about it all.Eye-wink

Dancing with the Stars going too?  Well this also is a big mistake!  Another high in the ratings show so many people love!

Just hope another TV station will take them both on!

NZ Idol... The 3rd world nation of Idoldom

I figured this would be it, 50k is a sizable chunk of dosh and I doubt TVNZ would be willing to constantly dish it out every year... Seems like they wanted to go out with a bang, to bad it was more like a plop... And I'm not sure if TV3 would pick it up either. Bring back Australian Idol.

TV Insider 17 October, 2006 - 7:53am

TVNZ actually "dish out" 6 mill for Idol.  Don't expect it to be picked up by any other network, it won't happen.

chevy 17 October, 2006 - 2:20am

reality a Private Company like Canwest will do way better than a State funded one ever would. I hope TVNZ gets its ass Privatised now then there will be heads on the block if new owners come in and start trimming the fat and staff numbers.
