The worst thing about the show was how the judges were praising Clinton to the roof for that way less than average performance of Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Even though he was probably the best on the night, he was still shockingly bad! If they think that is the sort of 'talent' that is good enough to win, I despair for what the rest of this season is going to be like! It wasn't even 1/100 as good as any of the times Clay Aiken sang that song.
I don't see Ashlee letting go until she's lived, and experienced the content of a lot of songs she'll be singing. I don't see her transforming as the competition progresses. Some singers at her age already have the story telling nailed down, but in her case, she's too fragile.
I completely missed the show LOL. I forgot to shove it on alarm and I was on the phone and forgot.

I actually felt kinda sorry for the contestants last night. Seriously, there were MAD boppers in that audience. I really don't think the contestants were quite prepared for it as it was pretty overwhelming. I would say it was the most bopperish audience I've ever been in and to be thrust in front of them to sing must have been pretty daunting.
I just hope that they're tougher next time and more prepared to handle the rollercoaster ride that is idol. It will be interesting to see how the next group fare and whether or not they can keep their emotions in check and hold their notes.
I think the audiences acted like that because it was the first time in 3 years that an Idol show was aired outside Auckland. The Canterbs were very excited. Let's see if the Welly peeps can outshine the Canterbs this Sunday.

the first part of the show, with the 6 of them performing, was shot about 20 minutes in advance. The rest was live.

After the show, I spoke with Ashlee and told her that she really needed to step it up now and move away from the story that has gotten her a lot of support to get her to into the top 10. She needs to let her personality shine and stop living the competition in the shadow of her departed friend or it is going to cost her.
You know that she has no choice of what goes up on the screen to sell her!!! Just like all the contestants t.v does that all 4 them so if you want to tell someone to stop talkin about it I'd suggest the crew that puts those stories together. She probly said one little bit about it and theyve probly kept it going till now
Seeing as her entire backstory on the show was about her late friend, it does suggest there was a lot of material to work with. If there was other stuff, they would have shown that sometime over the last month or so? She can't control how the sotry is put together, but she DOES provide the information. I respect that that's important to her, but she needs to move past that in the top 10.
Have you ever been on t.v??? I know that those clippings that were shown were what??? 20 seconds long each??? so those two 20 second clips that were put on there.. Is that what your referering to??? If youve ever been interviewed before you would know they do heaps of work on one topic, I'd bet that she had heaps of different footage and the directors and producers put that together.. For all you's that think that it was a sympathy vote is pathetic, get into the real television world and you would know you have no control over what the director's and producer's want put on there... And maybe lenken is a better singer then ashlee,but he picked the wrong song.. He ruined it for himself,he picked a unknown song.. Thats not ashlee's fault. Its disgusting how use talk about all them like this.. I liked 5 of those six singers and it was a tough group to put together...

Yeah, but you were shooting things. What was Ashlee doing? Lying on a bed rambling on about a dead friend. Possibly takes a bit less time to film someone sitting on a bed talking than filming someone shooting things THEN them talking.

hey mate, i think ashley is great and i wish her all the best!!! but im just posting in reference to ur comments about what gets edited and twisted in the interviews BEFORE an idol performs......in all the experiences i had on the show the director always wanted a life story or particular angle on which to base the segment on...there was never enough time to talk about everything and then edit after...the whole interview was often centered around one major story!!! what im saying is that ashley wouldv freely chosen the story of her friend to use in the segment and wouldv been aware of the intensions the director had in using it......
if i ever had anything inparticular i wanted to talk about or share with the public i had free reign from the director.....those interviews before the performance r probably the best chance for the idol 2 take contol and open up to the voters
as i said i think ashley is awsum, but i agree the critic is completely justified in what he did and my main focuz 4 posting is to point out that in my experience those pre performanceinterviews were never twisted and i felt they were some of the few times i actually had some of control over the edit!!
at the end of the day ashley wouldv been aware of what angle was going to be broadcast!!! who cares if it was for votes....more power to her!! haha

I haven't been on tv personally, but know someone who has been in a similar situation. You could always just discontinue using that story as part of your footage. After all, Ashlee has also appeared in women's magazines with the same story before voting began, she certainly had that choice. If there's anything I learned from my friend about how the tv portrays you, is that you have to be as real as possible and your true self, as TV loves a good scandal or sob story, and that you want to be recognised on your talent! I hope we learn more about Ashlee herself.
I'm not sure what's more of a shot in the foot: picking a well known song and doing it really badly, or picking a song that's isn't hugely known and doing it really well. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing where Ashlee and Lenken go to from here
hey.. hold up a minute. Personally, I think Ashlee has a lot to offer the show but she does have some control over the content. Sure, the producers are going to go for an angle for TV but we've also seen Ashlee in Woman's Day talking about the same thing.
Sympathy vote or not, Ashlee is now in the top 10 and that needs to be the positive. Who cares how you got there cause you're there now but it's how you come across each week that counts. I want to see Ashlee for who 'she' is and see her come out of her shell and shine. I believe she has it in her and that when she does she will prove why she deserves to be where she is.

I've been on TV quite a bit and I'm really aware the whole time of how they might re-package the things I'm telling them. You can't blame us for getting tired of the best friend story because that's all we've been presented. We'd love to get to know Ashlee more (she was really sweet and friendly when I met her) and find out what her interests are etc. If you know her, feel free to tell us some more about why she's an awesome person.

Good for you, that was excellent advice. The other thing is, didn't she say she and her friend were going to go to idol together? If both had gotten through; wouldn't they now be in competition with each other? Just a thought on she would have to be stepping up anyway. She seems to be a lovely kid; so let's hope she has taken on your advice.
She really needs to just... let go! Ashlee really does have the potential to do marvellous things, but I guess we'll have to wait and see...

None of the contestants have any control over the way their video is edited. I'm sure they are interviewed about a number of things, and in Ashley's case the producers decided to go with the dead friend story. So it's not her fault that she came across as trying for the sympathy vote, I'm sure she wasn't.
Good on ya, TC. I don't want her time in Idol to turn into a series of Veronica Mars. I like her, I'm just annoyed that she, along with two others, got in ahead of the much more deserving Lenken.

Good call, Critic. It could really come back and bite her in the butt if she's not careful. Especially if the pressure of the top 10 only serves to highlight the fact that she might not deserve to be there.
It's all very well having a story or another reason why people might vote for you (e.g: provincials town really support their own), but if you have to have the talent to keep going....

But im not stupid they probley did hourz and hourz of recording time and it would of been the PRODUCERS that decided to go with that im sure ashlee had no control of what was put on the stories even if she wanted to..

I dont think people should be blaming Ashlee, its unfortunate for her that she was put with Lenken. If it was between Lenken and Kali and Kali got through then the Lenken lovers would be dissing Kali..
If you're going to blame anyone, blame Clinton :P Most of the girls would of been voting for him because hes 'hot' but if he wasnt there they would of voted for the other 'hot' guy.
I also dont think the judges should pick who goes through to the wildcard show whatever..It should of been the person with the 4th highest amount of votes.
You have a point. We shouldn't be blaming Ashlee. We should be blaming a number of people. But, I disagree with your view of Wildcard competitors. What if George or Alyce had gotten more votes than Lenken as well? Where would we be at then?
I'm not blaming Ashlee. I think it was off of Megan to say what she did when she was responsible for getting Ashlee to the top 18. So I partially blame the judges and I fully blame the voters

Also, I can honestly say that if Lenken had lost to Alyce or Kali, I would have been disappointed but it wouldn't have been worth a comment.
Had he lost to Clinton or George, I would have vented just like I did last night.
