TV/Movies: Superman Returns

Submitted by Mr Phantomb on 19 June, 2006 - 11:18am.

In the wake of the Comic Book movie revival, the latest rehash is Superman Returns, a continuation of the Superman sagas and not a prequel like Batman Begins.

Starring Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and newcomer Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel, this Bryan Singer-directed film is the most expensive film ever made!

Personally I'm not sure what to make of it.
Normally I would be excited by such an event - Batman got me hyped and the movie didn't disappoint. Spider-Man 2 was a lot of fun while King Kong was an exceptional piece of film-making.

So why is Superman leaving me cold?

Perhaps it's the dated costume - The Blue suit with the red tightys seems dated and camp.
Routh, while looking every bit a worthy lookalike replacement to Christopher Reeves has none of Reeves charisma or all-American charm.

Kevin Spacey plays arch-villian Luthor with a complete lack of character. He may as well be Lex Luthor, CEO of Barclays Bank. It's sad to think that his apeing of Dr. Evil in Goldmember was more interesting than anything seen in the trailers for Superman so far.

Kate Bosworth as Superman's love interest Lois Lane, is pretty.....but that's it. The great appeal of Margot Kidder was her everyday persona and distinctly un-covergirl looks.

Here's a nice big Quicktime trailer to whet your appetite

Opens June 29th.

Superman II returns!!

There is a new DVD version of Superman II coming out at the end of November, the 'Donner Cut'.
Apparently, Donner (the Director of Superman, The Movie) made 75% of Superman II at the same time as the first movie, but got into some kind of argument with the producers and quit the project.
He replacement Richard Lester refilmed half the movie.

Now Donner's original footage has been restored, making this version of Superman II almost a whole new movie!!

As much as half the film is unseen material including 15 minutes of Barlon brando as Superman's father.
I'll be looking forward to seeing this, moreso than the DVD release of Superman Returns.

** contains SPOILERS **

Saw this yesterday, and it wasn't *bad*, just not the best superhero movie I've seen.
The familiar opening theme and credits sequence took me back to when I was a kid and I was looking forward to the movie itself but the actual movie didn't give me quite that same feeling.

Superman was OK, but I guess Christopher Reeve will always be the definitive Superman.
Kate Bosworth really wasn't plucky enough to play Lois, especially if it was supposed to be the same character that Margot Kidder played. Even Erica Durance's Lois from Smallville would have been better.
Kate is just too good looking.

As for Lois' son - SOMEONE GET THAT KID A HAIRCUT!

Not sure how the whole lois'-son-is-Superman's-kid angle either.
After Superman II didn't Superman kiss lois and remove all her memories of him being Clark and their romantic interlude? If so, Lois must wonder how the kid has powers etc.

Just a lil plot hole..

Best parts were seeing Brando again as Jor-El, young Clark running/jumping through the corn, and "didn't there used to be two of those?" Eye-wink

I wanted to go see the 3D bits at IMAX, but they're closed for the week because of technical difficulties.

Yup yup yup.
Here's a great summary from a Superman Returns Plot Holes page

5. Superconception: If the Superhump that went down in Superman 2 is the one that created the new kid, then the kid shouldn't have any powers at all -- since Supes and Lois did the horizontal fortress-dance while our hero was completely without powers. And anyway, since Superman ended up deleting Lane's memory of the Supertryst, she'd have no way of knowing that the kid belongs to Superstud in the first place.

6. Superrebound: Does Lois Lane's boyfriend think the kid is HIS? The movie never bothers to address it. Either he thinks the kid is his (which makes Lois Lane kind of a massive bitch), or he knows the kid has a different daddy. Oh, and also that Lois used to sleep with Superman about five years ago ...

I didn't like the remake. The only thing I enjoy, was the opening with the theme music, and when the lead character got stabbed with the Kryptonite!

Didn't WOW me at all.

Just came back from Superman.....or should I say Supersnore?

Man this movie is avvvverage.

I won't go into details and spoilers for everybody, but rather encourage those who haven't already, to hire out the original movie feature with Christopher Reeves and Gene Hackman.

Brandon Routh's Man Of Steel was very good looking.....but as bland as a piece of bread.

Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane was very good looking....but as bland as a piece of bread.

And in the words of Lois' son.....Kevin Spacey was bald.

That's pretty much all you need to know - you've seen all the best scenes in the trailer, including the granddaddy bullet-in-the-eye snippet.

Sorry everybody but there's just nothing at all to get excited about here. People thought Kong was long and slow-paced but at least it got better as it went along. This was the exact opposite.
Batman Begins, X-Men trilogy, Spider-Man and even ALL THREE Matrix movies are better.

6/10

I saw it I saw it I saw it and it was cool Laughing out loud maybe I'm a bit biased cos the cast was hot (James Marsden, Kate Boswroth, Brandon Routh ohh and the little 'son' Eye-wink was soooooooo adorable I would so guess him).

It was long but pretty cool and just what you'd expect I guess. Kate Bosworth was really good and yeah I enjoyed it. Woo.

I wanna go see it at Imax in 3D Cool

You can't.

Helen Clark has decreed that only Labour supporters are allowed to see the movie in 3D.

Mr Ubiquitous 2 July, 2006 - 9:48pm

Ohhh, sorry I forgot.
Yeh, you're right.
Helen has the market cornered on wearing primary-colored suit jackets and such.

ps..from The Movie Blog site....

Maybe that's why they call him SUPERman. This was just way too funny not to post. But apparently the studio execs are not very happy with an element of Bryan Singer's new Superman film. Oh they aren't worried about the quality of the production... they're worried about the size of Brandon Routh's bulge.

Apparently the new "Man of Steel" is so well endowed, the costure department had to fit him with a special codpiece for the movie. The execs are worried the bulge is going to become a distraction. The good folks over at Ananova then tell us what they're going to do about it:

The Sun's source said: "It's a major issue for the studio. Brandon is extremely well endowed and they don't want it up on the big screen.

"We may be forced to erase his package with digital effects."

How good must life be for Brandon Routh right now? I can just see him in a club hitting on some woman: "Yeah baby... they had to hire another special effects company to REDUCE the size of Mr. Krypton if you know what I mean". Too funny.

LOL Sticking out tongue

Lol!

Woo we get superman t-shirts to wear at work at the moment Laughing out loud

DevilDodo 22 June, 2006 - 4:03pm

The "S" is far too small...

The film looks decent enough. Though there are parts of the trailers that have me worried...

I have faith in Bryan Singer to pull this off though. He did, after all, give us X-Men 1 & 2...

cantdecide 23 June, 2006 - 11:11pm
BRYAN/BRYAN WON!! XD

YAY X-Men movies. He should have directed the last one ... Sad I wouldn't have minded if he put it off 'til after Superman Returns. I don't think the last X-Men movie was as good as the other two. :|

Mr Ubiquitous 22 June, 2006 - 4:07pm

The "S" is far too small...

Yep, yep....
I so *want* it to be good. Supes looks too modern or something tho, like a guy from GQ.

I see Sam's Town now!

*Randomly* My aunty was driving me around Newcastle and she pointed to some building and said "ooh, and they shot some of the new Superman movie there, the whole area was closed off, they had a big set, blah blah blah.." and I was like " :| ".

Get out of my car!!

The only thing that prevents me from wearing a cape and form fitting lycra everyday is the knowledge that I would probably get my arse kicked whenever I walked down the street ... I totally understand why Superman does it - Because he can.

I will probably see this. Along with the new Rocky, and the new Indiana Jones Smiling

DevilDodo 23 June, 2006 - 1:53pm

Indy 4 has been in roundabout talks for so long now I have doubts it'll ever get made...

Harrison Ford is confirmed and a script by Jeff Nathanson has been approved by Spielberg, Lucas and Ford.

It's all gonna happen baby!

DevilDodo 23 June, 2006 - 3:04pm

Yes, well, we'll just have to wait and see... It doesn't seem to be moving ahead with great velocity. I've been reading about it for years and we've only just got a script.

I just hope Ford can still deliver... what being 64 years old and all. He's definitley in need of a decent film, everything he's done lately has been terrible.

Davey Havok with a k is a beautiful, beautiful man

I ♥ Indiana Jones. Laughing out loud

Mr Ubiquitous 22 June, 2006 - 4:20pm

LOL, yeh.
I think the guys who made up those early costumed heroes based their looks on circus strongmen/acrobats of the day, perhaps?
You know, the athletic leotard etc..
