Podcasts are like downloadable radio shows and if you can play MP3, you can play a podcast. You don't have to subscribe, but if you do, you'll be able to automatically download new episodes to your iPod/computer when they come out.
Does it cost to subscribe to these things?

1. You can subscribe via an RSS reader, or,
2. You can subscribe via iTunes/iPod, or,
3. You can just download the MP3 (the first episode is here)
What's an RSS ready? (Sorry :$)
It's something which tracks blogs/podcasts for you. I.e., instead of going to 20 of your friend's blogs every day to see if they've written something new, you go to your RSS (feed) reader and it checks all your friend's blogs at once and sees if there's anything new and shows you all the new posts together.
Lots of people use Bloglines as their feed reader.
