Idolblog: Mini survey

Submitted by admin on 17 May, 2006 - 7:14pm.

1. If there was one thing (feature, page, option.. not member) you'd remove from the site, what would it be and why.
2. If there was one thing you'd add to the site, what would it be and why.

I was wondering - you know how people comment on the photos etc, could you possibly have an orange star or a (# New) message for the photos also? Smiling

Ev 3 June, 2006 - 6:50pm

Pedantic I know..........but :-#

Across the top it reads - Chat - TV/Movies - Music - Idolblog

When you open Forums - it reads - Chat - Music - TV/Movies - Idolblog

I have an e-pal from England

The "latest photo" thing on the sidebar is great Laughing out loud

And you know when you've voted on a survey? The "Your vote has been recorded" should say something else like.. Thanks, have a piece of pie for voting. Cheers! or just anything randomly kinda funny. Laughing out loud

I PUT THE SHIMMY ON YOUR COCOA POP

Hey Admin, I was wandering if you could maybe put in an option where you can delete your own posts if they have not yet been replyed to?  This would be handy also when you do those accidental double and triple posts.

If it doesn't kill you, you've failed.

Good idea.

1/ I think the idolblog design and change for Idol 3 is great...

2/ the suggestion I'd like to make has already been mentioned but I'd like to petition for it byv saying the structure of the content that is organised on the main page is rather confusing. The greyed portions of the headings or the story headings in general are kinda thick, which makes me think that those surrounding borders/boxes (and large story headings) can be made smaller to take advantage of more space.

The media panel (which has all the newspaper and online article links in it) , could just be a link on the left menu which directs to a dedicated media page (as we had before), and replaced by the discussion section because after all this is a site about discussion on everything about idol and community orientated it just seems as though the important parts of the website i.e. the discussion part, featured on the index is below the fold. sorry to be frank, but it ain't media orientated if you know what I mean...

The Opinion/Poll section could be a little popup window which if the poll is closed can be replaced by Updates made to the site or special announcements etc.

Less clutter, more white space. :beard:

auto down?

you know how when you click on a thread and read it. then page jumps down to the comment box which is annoying sometimes when halfway reading through a paragraph/post. can the auto down thing be taken out. i doubt anyone likes it going straight to the comment box

I think what you mean isi that when you click on "3 new" for example the page will go to the first new message. It takes it's time though so you can start reading at the top....then BAM it shoots you down.

I'm going to open my mouth again.

I would like to suggest again that we have a "Favorite Threads" something. When you click a little button by the Thread's header, it saves it into a special something so If you want to post there and not have to hunt for it (even after along time), you just click on it and it takes you there. It's not the same as My Discussions lol.

Ev 22 May, 2006 - 8:01pm

Thanks to whoever it was that said they used the My Discussions feature all of the time - and Admin put it back on Smiling

I had never used it before and now find all sorts of things that I would have missed otherwise Laughing out loud

1/ its great and dont want anything or anyone removed from Idolblog

2/ cut&pasting pictures to IB has never been a good job and i can never get to the bottom of how to properly do it. i dont know why we cant just highlight then cut&paste without the hassle of signing up to some other (photobucket, flicker etc) site then going through them. can we have the cut &paste working in normal fashion please.

I use the BBcode extension for Firefox cut'n'pasting.
It works with HTML too! (which this forum uses).

When it's installed, you just copy the address of the photo, then right-click here in the forum, and goto BBcode->HTMLcode->Clipboard->Image and it puts in the code.

It also does bold, italic, clickable URLs etc.

I've made a custom command thing for it that does blockquotes for me, too - it's quite easy.

Can't beat the old IB days

It won't work with me Sad

Mr Ubiquitous 22 May, 2006 - 7:46pm

What exactly did you do?

ps, you also have to turn off the Rich Text Editor - eg, goto My Profile at the top, then to the 'Edit' tab.
Now, where it says 'Enable rich text editor while authoring' make sure that is NOT TICKED

If it is, untick it and click 'Submit' button.

Um, using websites like Photobucket is normal fashion, chev.

Get out of my car!!

1. If there was one thing (feature, page, option.. not member) you'd remove from the site, what would it be and why?

The bold function. You can italicise, or caps to make your point - bold is being heavily abused.

2. If there was one thing you'd add to the site, what would it be and why?

I would add a spanish or italian woman, aged 26-32, 6ft tall, single, who likes long walks on the beach, plays guitar, listens to rock music, and loves giving people back massages. You asked Sticking out tongue

Actually, a 'remove account' option. Don't take that personally - I love this site. I can't leave without one though *is too weak* Remove account is kind of 'final' though - you could have one of those things where if you remove your account you can't join again or something.

Hotpink_Passion 19 May, 2006 - 11:10pm

1. I don't really mind the wider page thingy, Im getting used to it but it bugs me slightly and i know it can't be changed soo oh well i can live with it! Other wise theres nothing.

2. A bit more colour maybe?

This is more of an observation really, but you know up the top where all the different forums are clickable, I have a concern about the one labelled "General". It's listed directly below "Forums" and as such, has no direct alliance with it's main discussion topic - NZ Idol 3. We all know that "General" is always the main Idol forum, but I can see how someone new to the site may find it hard to know where to look for Idol 3 talk? Maybe rename it "NZ Idol 3"? I dunno. Maybe it's just me..

Ooh and what about a kudos system? I like kudos systems on other forums Laughing out loud It rewards constructive posts and deters spam!

Alaina Roar 19 May, 2006 - 12:00pm
Davey Havok with a k is a beautiful, beautiful man

I don't get kudos. I mean I know it rewards, but can you do anything with it? How does it deter spam? Cos people who don't care about kudos would still spam wouldn't they?

On other forums I've been on, you can implement wee forum 'shops' where you can spend your kudos on changing the colour of your name, adding sparkles (weee!) and other such niceties. It won't stop spam - what will?! - but I think it helps Smiling

The problem is, it can still be gamed. Digg.com and other sites with karma systems have had major problems with people rigging it.
