Chat: You learn something new every day

Submitted by Starshone on 6 January, 2006 - 11:06pm.

Today I learned that Alt + Ctrl + arrow key rotates your screen display ninety degrees (left tilts it to the right, right to the left, down gets the whole thing upside down, up brings it back to normal).

What did you learn?

I learned it when I was a kid, but I find it helpful nowadays on spelling out things to people on the telephone at work (email addresses and shipping container numbers and such).

Useful shortcuts -

(in the following, 'Windows Key' refers to the key between the CTRL and ALT keys on the left side of most computer keyboards that has the 'Windows Flag' logo on it).

Windows Key + M
minimizes all windows to the desktop
Windows Key + E opens Windows Explorer
Windows Key + F opens a find dialog for Windows.
CTRL + F opens a find dialog in your browser
ALT + D selects the address bar in your browser, ready for typing something in (I find this very useful)
Windows Key + Pause/Break brings up your System Properties

If you type a word into your browser's address bar, such as 'idolblog', then holding the CTRL key and pressing Enter will make it 'www.idolblog.com' - saves having to type 'www' and '.com' at the end.

Holding the ALT key and using the arrow keys lets you navigate forward and back a page in your browser.

Pressing ALT + Home keys takes you to your browser's home page.

Next, a very old one...Holding down the ALT key and pressing TAB switches between windows/programs on the taskbar. You hold down ALT and keep pressing TAB to switch between them until you've chosen the one you want, then u let go.

Ohh the minimize one is helpful Laughing out loud

Mr Ubiquitous 11 January, 2006 - 7:19pm

Yeh, and it's Windows Key + SHIFT + M to get them back the way they were Smiling

I think that Windows Key + D means "show desktop" or similar. It might even be faster than M

Hehe i'm so good at that song Sticking out tongue

I watched it (without singing) and I thought *A girl with a guys voice? hmm :S *

Then, we had a bbq, and I was singing this song, my uncle came in and said "Ive had enough of this queer song, Jeremy (my little bro) sung it all the way from Auckland to New Plymouth"

I said "Queer?"

Mum said "Well, yes, look the guy singing is wearing lipstick. He's gay you know."

Oh dear, My brother (my other one) said she (When it was really a HE) looked 'pretty'. :s

Ninja Sponge 9 January, 2006 - 11:23pm

OH I sung that the other day, and I go

"ohh my god that guy is so gay"

and My mother goes

"Yeah but back in those days they didn't know he was, it was how everyone dressed"

Then later on in the song..

Me: "Haha that guy looks like George Michael!"

Mum: " It is George Michael"

Me: "Ohh no wonder he looks gay."

I have awards in playdough sculpting

No It doesn't. I just tried!

Mr Ubiquitous 10 January, 2006 - 1:02pm

It's not the same for every computer - it depends on what kind of graphics card you have as to what it can do. Like, I have an NVIDIA grpahics card, and it has a lil icon on the taskbar near the clock. One of the settings there lets me rotate the screen.

Not every graphics card lets you rotate the screen.
