I have managed to lose three picks in the last week (well, two anyway, the first one disappeared long ago). My parents aren't buying me any more. I have fifty cents. Total. My hand can't handle the jandal.
So what are some guitar pick alternatives? I have been using a large button.
10 cent pieces are OK too, but best thing is to get into the habit of ALWAYS threading the pick thru the strings on the neck of guitar when you put it down
LOL, yeh it is easy to lose picks.
Brian May from Queen famously used a sixpence for a pick, although that was probably for for lead work rather that strumming.
I know that some people cut them from icecream container lids.
Nope, it's a special one off thing. It says 'From the publisher of Guitar World' (or something very similar) - It's in a sealed bag with a proper DVD case in it! It's not the normal magazine

Two instruments, the 'guitarra latina' and the 'guitarra moresca', become popular in Spain. Unlike the Viola, from nearby Italy, the guitarras are played 'de mano', or 'with the fingers'. The phrase 'you de mano', Spanish for 'awesome licks dude' dates back to this era.

Leonardo da Vinci invents the electric guitar. However his plans are lost forever when he is trampled to death by a group of schoolgirls who mistake him for Leonardo di Caprio.

Having just invented the phonograph, Thomas Edison makes the firs recording ever, "Mary Had A Little Lamb" Just three weeks later, the Puff Daddy remix appears.
I used to like the Guitar Sam cartoon they had.
In one of them (and I can't remember exactly how it went), it had Guitar Sam going to the Crossroads to meet Mel Bay at midnight, and it showed Mel talking to Sam saying, "...and you hold the pick thusly"
LOL, too funny, but you have to be a guitar player to get it (I know you are, but I mean the casual reader wouldn't get it)

They reckon that is the best way to study...no more practice than 15-20 minutes then take a break..I read the same thing in some typing tutorial. Any more than that and it doesn't really do much good.
Oh dude, if I'm teaching someone to play I ask them who there favourite bands are - then I pick easy songs by those bands (or ones without too many chords) and I get them to play along with the CD, practicing the timing of the chord changes.
Dude, Guitar World have come out with a special one off DVD/magazine combo with everything you need to know about playing rock guitar (classic stuff to the new stuff). It's $25.90 or something - check it out at a mag shop. \m/
got a electric guitar, tried to play the electric guitar, couldnt play the electric guitar, sold the electric guitar. Now i have an acoustic, lets see how long that last's.
First guitar lesson tonight! Using Dad's old acoustic Axtech AC21 (which means absolutely nothing to me apart from the acoustic bit) and a Jim Dunlop 60mm.
I plan on getting out one of those DVDs at the library that supposedly teaches you how to play guitar tomorrow. I am not expecting much success, I am slightly hopeless
ooh a cort good choice!!! I have a few helpful hints for you.
if you are going to amplify your guitar, don't turn it up on the amp (or on the volume nob on the guitar pickup) if you want it to be louder, get hard and play harder lol it will sound better than just turning it up.
Also if you are wanting to use a guitar pick, don't use a soft one as you will get a plasticy sound from your guitar.
There is a guitar pick that you can buy that is a bright yellow, I'm not to sure what the measurement is on it but I think it is 1.5mm.
If you find it hard to hang onto the picks you can scartch them with a nail to give them a rough surface (or you can drill a hole through them like my dad did for me) and it will make it alot easier to hang onto.
I've finally found a perfect 'hard' pick. It's a dunlop pick with a little pic of a rhino on it - it's only 0.73mm, but is super hard ... also unlike other hard picks that chip or wear down really quickly, this one maintains it's shape!!! It's great for fast heavy stuff and there is a lot of control ... I'll never go back to any other pick.
I like those Dunlop picks that have a kind of non-slip surface? They have a kind of 'dipped-in-talcum' feel to them.I think mine has an alligator on it. The blue one in the middle of the left column.
I like hard picks now to get a good sound out of the strings and so you can dig in.
If you're only beginning playing (eg, AOM), I recommend the Jim Dunlop Nylon 0.60 picks. (see below, middle of right column). They're not so hard - they have a bit of 'give' or bend, so that a beginner can strum and it doesn't matter if they get too close to the strings or strum too hard because the pick will bend a bit (but not so much as to be useless).
If a beginner has a pick that is too hard, they're likely to get a jarring effect and have it come loose from their fingers and be frustrated. (IMHO anyway).
It's analogous to walking along a picket fence and clacking a stick along the pickets as you walk. A really hard stick really bounces off and jars your hand, whereas a bendy willow branch is more forgiving (for a beginner, anyway)
I pretty much have used every Jim Dunlop pick in that bottom picture. I still use the 0.88mm on my acoustics - it has a bit of give, but it's hard enough to respond quickly.
The biggest I've used is a blue 2.00mm which had a nonslip 'dip' for your thumb and finger - it was a little harsh on my strings (0.09 standard gauge) so I went back.
My little Dunlop 'Ultex' one is AWESOME. I'm going to battle with technology and try and post a pic of it. Wish me luck

Busk so you can raise the extra $1.50 to buy said required pick.
A good way to keep track of your pick is to put it in the strings right up the end of the neck.
That way guitar always comes with pick.
Maybe you need a guitar pick necklace or earrings
Guitar Pick Necklace SITE
Some crowd on trade me sells picks for $6.95 for 12 of them - LINK
LMAO those are so hot! I'd totally get them confiscated at school though
that reminds me, I forgot to go get a necklace back. oops
10 cent pieces are OK too, but best thing is to get into the habit of ALWAYS threading the pick thru the strings on the neck of guitar when you put it down
No money
That is a good plan. Unlike my random "ooh let's bring the pick along with me to the science thing at uni" or whatever.
LOL awww shone!

Ooh, that's smart...I've taken to using a bit of an old bus pass (I tend to break them) but it just doesn't sound right or strum as well.
Andy Aledort Rocks! \m/
He has weird skinny fingers though
So true!
So do i! *wishes she could show*
This post is not here

Nope, it's a special one off thing. It says 'From the publisher of Guitar World' (or something very similar) - It's in a sealed bag with a proper DVD case in it! It's not the normal magazine

I looooooooooved Guitar Sam.
lmao!
I just spent the last hour mucking around with Caron (my guitar - I named it) when I'm supposed to be doing homework :'(
I used to study for 45 mins then play guitar for 15 mins - work both sides of the brain
How was your first lesson? I couldn't put my guitar down after my first lesson ... I've been hooked for 15 years.
They reckon that is the best way to study...no more practice than 15-20 minutes then take a break..I read the same thing in some typing tutorial. Any more than that and it doesn't really do much good.
It was good! ^-^ I can play two chords (C and D) haha yay me.
Cool! Go for it!! You just need to learn G and then you can play a basic rock song \m/
I like the G chord its easy to do and i think it sounds kool
\m/
Just wondering, what rock songs would you recommend?
Oh dude, if I'm teaching someone to play I ask them who there favourite bands are - then I pick easy songs by those bands (or ones without too many chords) and I get them to play along with the CD, practicing the timing of the chord changes.
okay, I like too many bands tho..
lol thanks ill thinks of some
Wow your good at giving good tips and advice

A bad(ish) pic of her but I love her to bits and she is a little beaut! Way better then any guitar I've ever had
WOOT
ooh a cort good choice!!! I have a few helpful hints for you.
The type of picks I use are:
Dunlop USA .73mm (the yellow pick)
and a Dunlop Medium thumb pick (good if you want to do finger picking)
