Peter's Back!

Peter Baker is back from the dead! And you know what that means, don't you? No, it doesn't mean you too can jump into a gas explosion and expect to survive. It means Nic Bishop is back on our screens! Here's a Q&A with the man himself...

So Nic, how was Peter feeling after he found out his death had been faked and he was now in the witness protection program?

Obviously pretty shocked and confused, but I think probably more frightened than anything else, not knowing what was happening back in the Bay.

Quite a bit of time passes between the explosion at Jack and Martha’s wedding and the return of Peter Baker to the bay. What’s Peter been doing?

He’s been in a safe house. He couldn’t leave, he couldn’t go anywhere. They had to keep him in there twenty four hours a day and he’s actually had no contact with the outside world whatsoever.

So what was his relationship with Drew like before Peter came to the Bay?

There wasn’t one, really. Peter’s been trying to make contact with Drew over the years and Drew’s basically said, ‘I don’t want to have anything to do with you’. What Peter has been doing is financially supporting Drew through school, not that Drew knew that. When Dan and Leah went through Peter’s financial records after they thought he was dead, [they discovered] he had no money. All of it had been going to Drew's boarding school. So Peter’s had an active part in his life that way, but no actual contact.

So what do you think he makes of Drew now that he’s back in his life?

Well, initially it’s the parental thing of hearing that your son is in danger and that’s what draws him back into the Bay, even though he really should not be doing that because he’s supposed to be in witness protection. He always wanted to establish that father and son relationship, but Drew always rejected him.

What do we know about the mother?

I assume it was a very brief thing.

What does Peter make of Drew hooking up with his and his brother’s ex?

When he first comes back, he basically says to him to keep away from Amanda because of his history with her and Dan’s. As far as he’s concerned, she’s bad news and has a history of hurting ‘The Baker boys’. I think he’s worried that Drew’s a young bloke caught up in all the glamour of this ‘older woman’ thing and you know, she looks great so Peter can understand the attraction, but he doesn’t want his son to get hurt.

So what’s in store for Peter now that he’s back?

He’s very much about trying to establish a connection with his son. That’s his number one priority, as well as to try and get his health and strength back and then to eventually go back to work. Obviously, Peter and Amanda have an ‘intense’ relationship and that causes a massive wedge between the family, so he’s very much trying to get all the family back on track especially Drew and Dan.

Now, how about you Nic? What have you been up to?

I had a daughter. She was born about a week after [my last stint on Home and Away] finished so it was kind of perfect timing really. So its been me at home being a dad. That’s been my latest role, which has been great, but I do a lot of voice over work and I teach a lot, mostly at NIDA. I run a screen acting course every Saturday that goes for the whole year so a lot of my efforts go into that.

I haven’t really been auditioning because I knew that I was coming back, so it was really just downtime and the last couple of months of my story line before I left were really full on, so I did need time to relax. All that running around in factories getting beaten up by women!

Do you enjoy the teaching?

I love it. I think that you learn a lot because acting is such an evolving thing and its all about personality and attitude and creating different roles and that’s not something you can necessarily master. You just have to keep learning and teaching helps me do that a lot.

What do you think would be your ultimate role?

I’d love to be in a western – put that out there in massive letters! Actually, a western with Juliet Binoche (laughs).

Home And Away � Back on track

Weeknights, 7pm, Seven Network

Almost three years have past since Callan Mulvey was seriously injured in a car accident near Byron Bay in NSW on New Year's Eve, 2003. Now, he's finally returning to series TV.
The ex-Heartbreak High star, who is still rumoured to be dating former co-star Lara Cox, has signed on as a guest star on Home And Away, playing Johnny Cooper, a particularly nasty piece of work. Johnny, the leader of a gang of violent surfers, has moved to the Bay in search of his brother, Rocco (Ian Meadows), who's recently been befriended by Sally (Kate Ritchie).

Last seen in the Aussie movie Thunderstruck, Callan all but disappeared from the public eye following the accident. According to sources, a court case is pending and he's not permitted to talk in depth about it, but it's believed his injuries were life-threatening.

Thankfully, it looks as though Callan has made a good recovery, and we're excited to see him on our screens once again.

This week, Amanda and Drew come perilously close to having their affair discovered – by the very last person they would want to find out about it – when Drew (Bobby Morley) is spotted wandering half-naked around Amanda's house.

"This is a big shock to the system for Amanda," says Holly Brisley, who plays the vixen. "It's a real wake-up call for her because they nearly get caught.

"After this, Amanda tells Drew, 'I can't do this any more'."

But little does Amanda know that she may have left it too late to call it a day with Drew. Someone else has already discovered her secret – her ex-husband, Dan (Tim Campbell).

"Of all the things Dan could have predicted, this wouldn't have been on his list," explains Holly. "It's one of those things that comes out of nowhere for him."

Will Dan reveal Drew and Amanda's secret – and who is the person who caught them in the first place?

Someone leaves the bay forever. A new couple's relationship blossoms. Another life hangs in the balance.

last night on home and away kim finds out he cannot have kids as a result from having mumps, which is gonna effect his relationship with rachel because they have been arguing lately about having kids because rachel wants kids now but kim wants to wait because he thinks he aint ready for kids as of yet. also martha and jack are having major marriage problems but if you ask me i think that martha is just being un-reasonable anyway they are on a break now and martha has moved beack to sallys. it was emilys funeral also. and that guy matilda is seeing, well hes actually gay. drew and amanda have been hooking up behind belles back and also cassie has been hooking up with macca behind ricks back, next week rick catches them together, and next week lucas and matilda may get back together. well thats all i can remember for now, i missed a couple of episodes this week, i prefer home and away rather than neighbours but at the mo neighbours seems more interesting than home and away. if anyone has any questions about any spoilers about home and away just ask me ok.

A Marriage on the Rocks

It was a relationship many thought would never happen, but then when it did it became a relationship no one thought would ever end. So who could have known that Jack and Martha’s marriage would start falling apart so soon…

Having survived a prank gone dangerously wrong when they were courting, an explosion on their wedding day and a helicopter crash that separated the bride and groom for days, how can Jack and Martha’s relationship be falling apart now?

Paul O’Brien, who plays Jack, says that’s a tough one.

“I guess it gets back to the fact that Jack is still living his life the way he used to live it with a girlfriend and clearly it’s upsetting Martha. He knows that work’s getting in the way, but then at the same time he knows its part of his job – you can’t just say, ‘Listen, I can’t not save someone’s life because my Mrs is expecting me home for tea’. So that’s kind of where the dilemma begins.�

How does Jodi Gordon, who plays Martha, see it?

“Martha thought that when she got married, he would understand that she became the priority, but instead, he kept going out and drinking, not coming home for dinner, not cleaning up around the house, working late hours and she became second best. Little bit by little, she got more and more fed up.�

But isn’t this something a sincere apology and a bunch of flowers could fix?

“Not under the circumstances,� says Jodi. “They had a fight and he sends her flowers and he thinks that OK, but he doesn’t understand why they had the fight. He could have avoiding sending flowers if he had just spoken to her and understood what the problem really was.�

So a major reason for Jack and Martha’s difficulties appears to be, as Paul puts it, “the communication barrier�. Jack’s not asking what the problem is and Martha’s not telling him, so when Jack realises that something is seriously wrong with their marriage, his response is, “How can I fix this?�. Which, according to Paul, “Just seems to frustrate Martha even more that he can’t see why she’s upset.�

So does Paul think Jack can actually see where Martha is coming from?

“He does, but he’s just got the wrong angle on it. He thinks it’s the fact that he’s not there for her enough and not giving her enough attention when she’s trying to point out that it’s more than that. He’s not committed to the marriage and therefore, maybe she thinks that he doesn’t love her the same way.�

Does Jodi think Martha believes a relationship should change significantly after marriage?

“I don’t think so, but she did expect more of Jack. They were fine as girlfriend and boyfriend and then they got serious very quickly. Then all of sudden, they’re married and I think she just had different expectations to him. He thought he could just keep pottering along, but she was like ‘I need this and that’ – she’s quite demanding.�

Contributing to Jack and Martha’s marriage difficulties is the apparent difference in what they think a marriage should be like. According to Paul, Martha wants that strong bond, connection and commitment and Jack’s more like, “Let’s just slowly get to that as things happen and we get a house and we’ve got joint bank accounts and we have kids…� Add to that their communication problems and things aren’t looking good. As Jodi says, “They are on completely different wavelengths so it’s just not working out.�

Despite all the best intentions as to long-term commitment it remains a fact of life that a lot of relationships break down. In fact, about one-third of marriages in Australia come to an end. In the case of Jack and Martha, it appears that sadly, love is just not going to be enough...

Hello All,

Well, first of all, I have some fantastic news. The charges against Kim have been dropped and he’s returned to the bay – as co-manager of the gym with Tony, no less! Rachel must be so happy.

Morag made a major breakthrough when she managed to get in touch with Tara’s mum, but really, it was Tara’s own antics that revealed her as the liar she is. A sad story, really…

It turns out that Tara has been trying to get her Dad’s attention for years by resorting to ever-increasing bad behaviour. From many unreported acts of shoplifting (hushed up by her Dad) to lying about Kim assaulting her, to even claiming her mother had abused her, Tara was finally caught out when she pretended she’d been attacked by Lucas.

He’d discovered the missing hospital tests in her bag and threatened to tell the police, so she scratched herself and screamed until Alf came in and found them together in the deserted gym. But when she was told that her Mum had been talking to Morag and that the new DNA tests would show the skin under her fingernails was her own, Tara realised the game was up and ran off from the hospital.

I heard later that Rachel found her the next day up on the headland. Very upset, she confessed to everything and allowed Rachel to lead her away from the edge…

Poor old Brad seems to be on an edge right now as well. As happy as I am about Kim, it’s just so sad to know that Emily doesn’t have long to live. Brad organised a surprise for her during the week, taking her out by boat to a secluded inlet. Apparently they were enjoying a lovely picnic when Emily suddenly fell unconscious.

Brad managed to get her back in the boat, and with the help of Cassie and Macca, got her to the hospital. That’s where we got the news: she only has days left.

I feel a little bad that amidst all that sadness, I couldn’t help but wonder what Macca and Cassie were doing together on the beach. Ric came back briefly this week and it’s my understanding Cassie didn’t say anything to him about Macca, but then a little birdy told me that Cassie can’t deny her feelings for Macca anymore.

She’s a good girl, Cassie, but if she’s decided Macca is the one for her, then she’s got to tell Ric quickly or she’s going to hurt him. For all the bad things Macca has done, I know he doesn’t want to hurt Ric either. They’re going to have to stop kissing in public or a little birdy might tell Ric as well. Maybe Macca moving in with Irene will buy Cassie enough time to tell Ric…

Another rumour going round town is that Amanda is having something of a ‘Mrs Robinson’ effect on Drew. Apparently, he can’t keep his eyes off his girlfriend’s mother. That kind of infatuation can only end in tears. I hope Drew does the right thing because I’m not sure Amanda can.

Anyway, Drew’s got enough on his plate what with The Pyro trying to frame him for arson and who knows what else. I hear that Jack thought it might have been Dave the fireman who’s been lighting all the fires, but then Peter Baker’s DNA showed up on a canister left at the last fire. How can that be? Peter died in the fire at Jack and Martha’s wedding.

I hope those two are going OK. Someone mentioned that Martha’s been a bit upset about Jack’s long working hours and his ‘single-man’ habits. Those two help everyone else so much, I just hope they can help each other. I mean, it was those two that got a very upset Tasha from the beach back home to Ella. But when they got there…

Ella was missing! A few moments of panic followed before they found out Charity had found the abandoned Ella with a fever and taken her to the hospital. When they got there, Robbie was not as upset with Tasha as she was with herself. He’s an understanding man that one, especially considering he has an impending court case. He forgave Tasha for running away from Ella and with his support, Tasha is trying even harder to connect with her baby. She was very grateful to Charity and has asked her for her help.

Well, that’s all for this week. Oh, one last thing, it seems Lucas and Mattie are at odds over Dean. Lucas told Mattie that the boy Dean's been hanging out with isn’t his brother – Drew went to boarding school with Dean and says he is an only child. Apparently, Mattie got very upset with Lucas and believes Dean. Poor Mattie, she’s about to have surgery and she’s got two boys fighting over her!

Oh well, gotta run! Talk to you next week.
