NZ Idol 2: Where is this year's Purple Rain?

Submitted by SingaBoi on 26 September, 2005 - 10:18pm.

I mean c'mon I feel like I havent had an absolutely stunny, stand-out performance of ANYTHING yet! They're getting close but didnt Camillia sing Purple Rain in like the top 8 or 7 or something?

I guess it can still come as Guys 'Climb Every Mountain' was in the top 3 but seriously I want someone to completely blow me away Sad

I think if keshia was still in the competition she woulda given us a "purple rain" performance! She was robbed!!

Hotpink_Passion 5 October, 2005 - 10:29am

i agree, no one is like omg yay wow!!!
Rostia could do it if she steped out of her box because she always seems to sing slow, moving songs....why don't she sing sumthing with a fast beat?

Mr Phantomb 4 October, 2005 - 9:17am

The only person left who can give us big notes is Rosita.
Nik's upper range is pretty limited as we saw on Sunday when he tried to spiral up.
Steven just doesn't.

™®»©ÜмĢ... 4 October, 2005 - 2:52pm

Really? I thought Stevo possibly could but just doesn't know how...?

SoulPatrolBaby 3 October, 2005 - 9:52pm

I agree..no ones made me go WOW at all...

tellitikeitis 3 October, 2005 - 2:00pm

I do, however, live in hope

tellitikeitis 3 October, 2005 - 2:00pm

There hasn't been one performance yet this year that has come anywhere close to Camillia's Purple Rain, and I seriously doubt any of the ones left would be able to come close.

admin 3 October, 2005 - 9:23am

I think that in hindsight, we all remember things more fondly than they actually were.

Kiwibelle 3 October, 2005 - 1:33am

I realise there's plenty that won't agree, but having watched Nik's (Evermore's) It's too late again - I would have to say that is my Purple Rain - I freakin' LOVED IT, goosebumps and everything. Stand out of the whole series for me ... *ducks while the shrieking starts*

I wonder how much of this relates to all the THEMES this year? How many weeks last year had themes?

I think that if I was a contestant, it would be hard enough deciding what to sing in the first place, given the importance of song choice in this competition, without being dictated to with regards genre.

I wonder if this puts additional anxiety on the contestants?

BIMI 3 October, 2005 - 9:46am
What's the craic?!

Yeah, every week last year had a "theme" ... but I seem to recall that the themes last year were more clear cut - this year all the themes sort of blur into each other, and there's nothing really very different from week to week.

ahmad 3 October, 2005 - 3:24pm

Sorry guys - I didn't realise EVERY week last year had themes. I only recall one theme - "Ballads".

What else was there? Were they themes or GENRES like this year?

Thanks.

SingaBoi 3 October, 2005 - 3:33pm

There was Contestants choice, British Invasion, 80's, Rock, Ballads, Soul, Homegrown, the night Camillia sung Lady Marmalade lol

™®»©ÜмĢ... 4 October, 2005 - 2:56pm

Yeah... I think last year had it right when they had a theme then genre, theme, genre etc etc... Everything was pretty even throughout the season... Everything seems outta whack this time round... Ugh.

ahmad 3 October, 2005 - 7:19pm

Thanks! Memory...

Well, the themes are there, but there's nothing different in the performances  They're all somehow turning the themes round to their own style the same way they sing each week.

easitman 3 October, 2005 - 10:08am

gotta to agree there.

SingaBoi 3 October, 2005 - 1:40am

Ummm every week except the first had a theme

I dont think that we are going to get one this year to be honest

you can see into the future?!

COOL *rolls eyes*

flyboi 28 September, 2005 - 12:55am

Purple Rain???? I didnt really think it was all that.....oh well

MattyJ 28 September, 2005 - 12:31am

Uninvited was......I think delicious is the best description.

Chains was easily the best performance outta my group. I feel bad now, because I told Lissel that she was easily the best and was the most likely to get through, and she didn't. *cry* I have to stop doing that, I said similar things during the theatre round and those people ended up going too. Bleh!

I Believe was fabulous, a little oversung but would probably sound much better than the original (by Yolanda Adams) if she recorded it and got all the notes perfect. I liked the touch of grunt Keshia injected into that performance.

The think the reason it's been harder for them to deliver a "Purple Rain" is because they are so much better than last years contestants and the standard is already pretty much up there. Now somebody just has to take it even higher.

ahmad 29 September, 2005 - 10:54pm

Hey wassup Matty...what did you mean by "Chains was easily the best performance outta my group"? Were you a contestant? Sorry (Doh!).

7Sins 30 September, 2005 - 11:56am
*is a can opener*

Yes he was.

ahmad 30 September, 2005 - 12:58pm

Ah, that would be Matt then Smiling Cool.

dirrtyidol 29 September, 2005 - 12:14pm

WoW do I have to disagree. Last year's contestant's were much better. With the exception of Rosita & Teresa,  there is absolutely NO stand-out performances this season.

You're kidding me right?
(I know you're not but I had to ask)

Geez, Luke's "Sittin Inside My Head", Ben's "American Woman", even Michael's "Tears in Heaven" were better than what we've seen this year.

Becks Wright for NZ Idol 3!!

Ah yes, Michael's "Tears in Heaven".

"It's the first week they haven't had to transpose the song down for me, cause I can actually sing this one!"

Oh if only the standard this year were as high.  If only Rosita had the voice of Michael Murphy.

Loyal 29 September, 2005 - 2:20pm

I don't know how anyone could consider this year's top 5 anywhere near as high a standard as last year!

All the top 5 last year gave outstanding performances - some of them did many times!  Phantomb just give a few examples here!

This year there's not been one memorable, outstanding performance!

MattyJ 29 September, 2005 - 4:32pm

All I have to say to you three is that you obviously don't know or care about the technicalitites of singing. Nik is a better singer than Ben or Dave, Jesse is a better singer than Michael, Luke, or Eddie, Teresa is a much better singer than Jessie and so was Ashley, Keshia is about as good as Camillia (and that's saying something), Rosita is so much better than Sela it's not funny.

Last year's singers had more personality and lousy voices, this year's singers have great voices and less personality. Obviously you prefer the former.

fafanapole 3 October, 2005 - 9:52am
Becks Wright for NZ Idol 3!!

If we are talking technicalities of singing, Jessie Cassin walks all over Teresa. As a pop singer, however, Jessie was awful, and I guess that is more relevant here.

I'm still with MattyJ, though... Season 1 was lame, and it amazes me to see people saying the standard has dropped.  I thought NZ Idol 1 was a complete embarassment to our country.  At least this time round we have Rosita and Nik.

Dude I teach singing.

I think I have a pretty good grasp of it.

Have you got Mp3s from last year?

More than a "pretty good" grasp! Smiling

ahmad 30 September, 2005 - 11:35am

Anywhere where we can get these Mr Phantomb?

The site that did have them has disappeared I think.

But I've got everything from the Top24 if you want them.

The only one I can see has the chance of turning out a really moving outstanding performance is Rosita.  Hope she manages to do that for us!

I didn't know it rained PURPLE!!! What is the world coming too?

Lissel singing Chains was the best i've seen this season.  Granted, it was no Climb Every Mountain, but come on guys, neither was Purple Rain!!!

I still think Rosita and Nik have the potential to pull something amazing out in the next few weeks.  Doesn't anybody remember Rosita singing Pokarekare Ana in that showstoppers show?  Her voice is huge, and we haven't seen nothing yet!

X 26 September, 2005 - 11:43pm

Nik's "I'm Your Baby Tonight" was on the same level for me.

Kiwibelle 27 September, 2005 - 11:10am

Yep - that and I Believe for me. Actually, since Prince seems to hit the right note in so many of the 'outstanding' performances, I would have loved to see Nik sing Little Red Corvette in what was the R&B night (not now I know) - its a very sexy song, with falsettos and all sorts, so I think he could have done it justice, as well as making many women melt ... oh well Sad

Kiwibelle 27 September, 2005 - 11:17am

... actually, having just listened to it, I doubt the producers would let him anyway ...!

SingaBoi 27 September, 2005 - 12:35am

No anything by Nik is nowhere near as good! Shame on you!

Smeagoll 27 September, 2005 - 12:36am
I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

Well of course you'd say that, you're anti-Nik. Purple Rain was crap anyway

Sinead 27 September, 2005 - 12:40am
[siné]

i thought purple rain was crap too - i still dont understand why everyone thinks it was so good...

™®»©ÜмĢ... 26 September, 2005 - 11:14pm

Unfortunately none of these Idols have the experience and power of Camillia... which in the end was her down fall...
Lissel would of been our best bet at blowing the roof off etc etc etc.. But we all know that ain't gonna happen...

Rosita still has a bit of a way to go but she could pull off something spectacular...

And I actually think Steve has the potential to pull something out of the hat... He's got the voice but he doesn't know how to use it... Puzzled

Nellie old account 26 September, 2005 - 11:16pm

I agree with you 110%.

I don't think there will be a Purple Rain this year.

miss_chaos 26 September, 2005 - 11:12pm
YOU ARE A syphillis SO PISS OFF

I thought Nik singing Lets Stay Together was pretty awesome.
