i tried to install winmx but it asked me to pay for it. paying to download songs kind of defeats the whole purpose???

Muska 13 October, 2005 - 11:17pm

Winmx isnt gone. I read somewhre on the net that it will pop back up later. and better then ever. there gonna ad something that makes the uckers of RIAA harder for them to track them down. And limewire sucks. and it costs 18.00 bucks to get limewire while winmx is free. Winmx has and always be the best! Long live winmx.

still not up but my work mate tells me WinMx Canada are moving their super Computers whatever? to Vanaatu or some Island where the Law wont quite reach them. then get online and fire the servers back again or whatever they do

Mr Ubiquitous 27 September, 2005 - 12:38pm

On September 13, 2005, WinMX was the recipient of a letter (along with 6 other P2P firms) from the RIAA. The letter demanded the receiving developers they cease infringing operations immediately, and offered to "discuss pre-litigation resolution of these claims."

Like Alberto Treves' decision to release the source of Ares Galaxy, or Sam Yagan's decision to join the DCIA, every move a P2P developer makes is immediately questioned to be in direct response to the RIAA's letter campaign. Such is the case for FrontCode Technologies. Or should we say WinMX Technology Associates?

Currently, the WinMX.com homepage, the FrontCode.com homepage, the WinMX PNP Network and all of its host caches are down. It is impossible to connect to the network, and those remaining online will only stay online as long as their host supernodes do. But is this the end of WinMX?

Perhaps not. Interestingly enough, if one conducts a DNS whois for "WinMX.com", the result directs owner ship to a "WinMX Technology Associates" - not FrontCode Technologies as it has in the past. Even more interesting is the geographical relocation from Toronto, Canada to Port Vila, Vanuatu. Many will remember that Sharman Networks pulled a similar stunt to avoid prosecution in the Netherlands and to capitalize on "tax efficiencies."

FrontCode.com is still registered in Canada. Kevin Hearn, who is usually readily available for comment with Slyck.com, has not responded to inquiries for several weeks.

Before anyone clamors the end of the WinMX PNP network, time needs to be given to allow for this development to unfold. Although it appears WinMX.com was reregistered prior to this event, its occurrence cannot be downplayed until this fluid situation is resolved.

Looks like the days of P2P are numbered...

The law is always one step behind the programmers. Everyone thought it was the end of P2P when Napster stopped.

Apparently there is a patch that will fix it http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=26688 tells the story and there is a patch there apparently - I haven't been there as I use winmx but if your game you could try but it's not worth the risk

Yip. 26 September, 2005 - 6:36pm

There are rumours going around that Limewire will follow Kazaa's footsteps. Download as many songs as you can while Limewire is the best p2p software around.

I have awards in playdough sculpting

I don't have WinMx but I have Limewire. You should switch to Limewire.

Swayer 26 September, 2005 - 6:05pm

I use edonkey. It's just a breakoff from Kazaa and Limewire.

Jacob 26 September, 2005 - 6:05pm

If there is a corrupted file on Limewire, it warns you before you download it, so you can cancel the download. Limewire is the fastest, and has a good number of songs

WinMx was the best and known for the least corrupt files. Not like Kazza

™®»©ÜмĢ... 26 September, 2005 - 7:03pm

Actually Ares is... Winmix probably got shut down from the big-wigs... Is this the end of P2P?

ok i have to admit being way behind here.

 what is P2P?

spazz 27 September, 2005 - 12:06am
thenathanandredshow.com ;]

It stands for peer-to-peer.. It's the protocol behind programs like Kazaa, Limewire, etc.

™®»©ÜмĢ... 27 September, 2005 - 4:33am

Blah blah protocol and all your technical terms bouncin around up in here bummin my ass out... lol

™®»©ÜмĢ... 26 September, 2005 - 7:46pm

P2P means 'person-2-person' (I think - well it fits anyway. lol)
It's the network? that Kazaa, Winmx, Ares, Limewire and every other program uses to share files... Does that make sense lol?

MattyJ 26 September, 2005 - 5:45pm

Thank goodness. WinMx sucks.

Jaynee 26 September, 2005 - 5:33pm
I see Sam's Town now!

Mine won't connect either! Sad

Jacob 26 September, 2005 - 5:25pm

WinMX isn't very good in the first place... Limewire is far better!

Switch to Limewire
