TV/Movies: Interrogation - Prime

Submitted by Idolbabe on 28 August, 2005 - 4:47pm.

Interrogation is Prime's first foray into the important world of local drama and by all accounts a powerful one. The 13-part series, produced by South Pacific Pictures, explores the emotional impact crime has on both its victims and the police. Set predominantly in the claustrophobic surrounds of a police interrogation room, this show is driven by strong performances - I wanted to meet the actors responsible for bringing justice.

I had been summoned, ironically, to a cramped bar on Fort Lane in Auckland mere metres from a downtown police station. Barely avoiding a strip search at the door (maybe next time), I sidle into what seems like a glitzy media event, but no, the fine tailored suits, lip gloss and martinis are just a cover. Underneath it all the actors are reeling from the trauma of playing cops exposed to New Zealand's criminal underbelly.

Scott Wills, perhaps best known for his role in the movie Stickmen, pulls me aside and explains what he went through before filming began for Interrogation. "I hung out with cops from the Auckland Central CIB unit to research my role," he says. "These guys have seen almost everything but they still have a lot of compassion and enjoyment for their job... I had to ride in their cars and listen to their jokes. They're funny but, it's a very black humour." No doubt.

As it happens humour is an important cover for Interrogation's core talent Luanne Gordon who is probably emotionally wrought inside. We meet over tuna: "I'm starving, I'll have two (two pieces not two whole tunas)," she says delicately filling her mouth.

For her new role on Interrogation the former star of The Strip has reinvented herself as a badass cop, and it shows. Before long Luanne is interrogating me with my pen and notepad, obviously forming an in-depth character profile. Shortly after, she offers me a quick lesson in interrogation: "You should check my handbag for incriminating evidence." I oblige and discover, among everyday handbag items, "health" pills and, what, a can of tuna - I knew being in a crime drama was taking its toll.

Putting on brave faces also are John Leigh (formerly Shortland Street's Lionel), Miriama McDowell and newcomer Brian Sagala who's biggest claim until now was being Dei Hamo's cousin. Sagala has an enthusiasm that is contagious and with six kids and a wife of 10 years at home, believes his everyday life and his acting life are two different worlds. "This doesn't feel real to me," he says looking around the busy room - with interrogating eyes everywhere, I know what he means.

Peter Elliot and Jay Bunyan (former Neighbours star) are also working the room but this time our paths don't cross. Instead, Scott Wills returns with more words of wisdom. Wills thinks Interrogation will become the jewel in Prime's crown even though the programme's budget is, according to him, only a third of what Outrageous Fortune got. "Each episode of CSI takes five weeks to shoot and costs $3 million. We take five days to shoot an ep and it costs us 20 bucks." I think he's a little delusional - it must be all that stress he's covering up. I leave him to clean up on the pool table.

Interrogation promises to be a gritty, intense drama that New Zealanders can be proud of - it certainly has all the credentials. As Miriama McDowell points out keenly, Prime's new local drama features, "the best New Zealand talent." Other renowned actors set to make a guest appearance include Joel Tobeck, Tim Balme, Anthony Starr, Claire Chitham, Ian Hughes and Blair Strang.

Premieres on Wednesday, August 31 at 8.30pm on Prime

DevilDodo 10 September, 2005 - 6:30pm

How 'bout getting some new actors?!? I'm sick of seeing all the same people on these kiwi shows!

umkirstn 24 September, 2005 - 10:58pm

There were new actors I know for a FACT.

DevilDodo 27 September, 2005 - 8:10pm

I mean for the main characters...

Peter Elliot, John Leigh, Jay Bunyan, that chick from 'The Strip'... and as guest stars Blair Strang, and that dude from the juice ads.

At least 'The Market' had mostly new faces in the leading roles... too bad the show sucks...

umkirstn 30 September, 2005 - 12:26am

Well Luanne Gordon (The Strip) and Miriama are relitively new. Blair, Iv only ever seen him on Shorty St. I never knew he could act the way he did, he always seemed like such a likeable guy haha. But that episode let him show off a bit more of his talents as character that was COMPLETLEY differant. I know the core cast is mostley 'old faces' but I do like them.
The Keri Juice ad guy, well he was on the Tribe, hes been on a few ads and Im sure hes been on some other stuff but this is the first time Iv actually seen him act. I think hes pretty good and hes hardly an old face. Hes still new talent.
I know theyve got new faces cause I was one of them and interrogation was the first Iv ever auditioned for and  I luckily got a main part in one of the eps, twas also two other girls' first times so yeap, new talent, awesome haha.

The Market, I REALLY want to watch that and have a look see what its like for myself. When is it on?

Im 17 tomorrow woohoo! Laughing out loud

Jacob 30 September, 2005 - 12:34am

Is it Miriama Smith? I think that's her name...

She's not new, she used to be a nurse on Shortland Street years ago, and she was on Last Man Standing!

Could not be her though... I don't watch it

umkirstn 4 October, 2005 - 11:01am

naw its  Miriama McDowell not Smith

There were new faces on the fourth episode last night. Speaking of which, what did you all think about last nights episode?

Jasper 9 September, 2005 - 10:34pm

I know a few people from this show...and it's annoying 'cause I have drama class on Wednesday nights! And I never remember to set-up the video machine...looking forward to the day I catch a glimpse.

umkirstn 22 September, 2005 - 3:35pm

who do you know from the show?

umkirstn 8 September, 2005 - 7:43pm

I THOUGHT EPISODE 2 WAS AWESOME! The first one was a bit of a slow starter, but as it went on, almost made me cry..almost.
Anyway I loved episode two, THAT shouldve been their episode ONE to grab more of an audience me thinks. Anyone watch it? Got any feedback? Im not usually one for Crime\drama series, but THIS is actually a really great show. I wish Prime was more popluare so that I could talk to more people about it.

Swayer 10 September, 2005 - 6:20pm

I agree Smiling

The first episode i thought was crap. In fact the only reason i watched the second was because i was at my dad's and i couldn't be bothered doing work. That chic really pissed me off though, and the guy who smirked the whole time was hottt. So yeah, the second episode i actually quite like.

umkirstn 22 September, 2005 - 3:37pm

haha  yeah the second ep was awesome. Im sure Iv seen "the guy that smirked" somewhere before, he looks really familiare.. I know the other guy that played his mate is on the keri juice ad and was on The tribe.. anyway my mate was on that ep too, they had a pretty great cast Id say for the second ep and a far better storyline. Did you watch last nights?

Resh. 2 September, 2005 - 9:18am

I only saw like 10 mins of it - Couldn't be bothered watching the rest of it, not my type of show.

Swayer 1 September, 2005 - 4:34pm

Ugh. Thought it was crap.
