Top 10 - Performance Show - Contestant's Choice

Submitted by alcatel on 21 August, 2005 - 8:32pm.

Here are tonight's voting numbers.

First up is the group single: Dedicated To The One I Love - Mamas and Papas. Dom says the single is out in stores tomorrow.

Paul's dressed in a Willy Wonka jacket, ugh. So weird, Frankie got cut off in the middle of his comments and it's gone off to a million ads!!!! After the break we never get to hear the end of Frankie's comments...ahh well...

Next up we see the Idols hanging out at Sky City - hehe, I see Anjelus, Robyn and Alaina in the background! Up at Orbit, Dom makes a toast to them all for getting this far with a funky looking cocktail.

First up is Ashley singing Everywhere - Michelle Branch. She says it's been overwhelming. She doesn't want to go home, she's had such a great time. "Take every opportunity when it comes your way. I definitely have drive and determination."

  • Paul: "you're off the cruise ship, you're on the stage, great performance well done."
  • Frankie: "mature performance, you have all the moves, you have it off."
  • Jackie: "finally acting your age and singing a contemporary song, you sound fantastic".

Rongo sings Hidden Agenda - Craig David. He says he's really happy to be here but is really nervous. He's so excited about being in the studio for the first time and is reall buzzing out. He feels he's come a long way and feels more confident and thankful for the opportunity.

  • Frank: "ok, Rongo! Rongo from Mohaka! They love you man, they really do and that's what performing is all about, getting the audience on your side. You have it all in front of you man. Get your voice up to the level of your performance and you'll take the world by storm brother."
  • Paul: "raw talent, your time on this show will mold you into a great performer".
  • Jackie: "Are all the boys in Mohaka like you" (Rongo says she'll have to find out herself) "Natural, I love that sweet little falsetto, perfect song for you."

Keshia sings I Believe - Yolanda Adams (Honey Soundtrack). Keshia is so glad there will be a big audience to feed off, and see their reactions. She chose "I believe" as a positive song to believe in yourself which she can have fun with and dance to.

  • Paul: "You can't beat a live audience, fantastic performance, you're a diva in the making, congratulations."
  • Jackie: "I believe you even more for singing up a storm. You are sexy, sassy, you totally own the stage, yes! Rrrr!"
  • Frankie: "I just wish the rest of NZ could be here tonight because it's so much better in a live environment".

Frank sings How Could You - Mario. "I want to show my face, my voice, and do good performances. It's addictive, I find myself addictive to the public, so there's a whole lot of addiction going around."

  • Paul: "Relax and enjoy the moment. You'll go through to next week, there's no doubt about that."
  • Jackie: "You grow in front of an audience. Realise that you can take it twice as far."
  • Frankie: "Watch you don't do the same old same old bro, 'cos you got more talent than that."

Nik sings Don’t Worry ’bout a Thing - Stevie Wonder. He's been struggling with losing his voice this week. "Having a life audience is what it's about, so that's exciting. You can interact with the smiling faces, entertain them. I'm a club dancer. I'm loving all the people we're working with. Great experience, once in a lifetime, I'm glad to be here."

  • Paul: "I was hoping for a better song choice from you. I do like your voice a lot, so well done."
  • Jackie: "you're so smooth, it's what I love about you but need to get dangerous."
  • Frankie: "Yeah Nik, great song, pretty good version, I know you've been struggling vocally this week, but you covered it up very well, you deserve to stay in this competition."

Shelley sings Loving You - Alicia Keys. "When they told me I was in the Top 10 I was so shocked. It was amazing, it was the best feeling. It was great. I love going to hair and makeup, it's the best, it just makes me feel great. I want a challenge so I set a goal for me each week and try and reach that goal. I'm easy going, I love people and I love making them happy and I think that could see me through."

  • Paul:"That was a very passionate felt performance, natural performer, well done."
  • Frankie: "There was a lot of faults in that performance for me, breathing in the wrong places, in the middle of words which is a no no for singing. It wasn't the best one from you to be honest".
  • Jackie: "I love where it flows from, I do get worried though in the top range, it sounds really crunchy. I love the fact that you're going for it".

Steven sings Spin - Lifehouse. He's the only one from the South Island. "I have been relaxed a lot throughout the competition. It's so much fun, I'm like a wee kid. Bring on 10 weeks if you ask me!"

  • Paul: "You've got a great attitude, you bring a great element to the show."
  • Jackie: "I would change very little about that performance."
  • Frankie: "You have something different, watch that you don't get too relaxed."

Rosita sings Nobody's supposed to be here - Deborah Cox. "I just do the clubbing moves, anything else it's a challenge, funny. I'm a very sensitive person, very honest, I feel like I'm doing a job interview, ahhh stop! No matter what size, ethnicity, religion, it don't matter if you got something in there, it's about you shining, taking the risk."

  • Paul: "When you sing it's spectacular."
  • Jackie: "Rosita you just flowed, magnificent, I loved it."
  • Frankie: "You've just delivered on that potential tonight, oooooh yeah!"

Jesse sings Be Yourself - Audio Slave. "I love competition, I love a challenge, I'll be competitive. I think I could live the life of a rock star. I think that this year, rock could take it out. My secret to relaxing is eating lots of food, oh wait that's my secret to everything. I'm just trying to take on board everything."

  • Paul: "huge song, pace yourself. Look after that voice."
  • Frankie: "You are a really good rock singer."
  • Jackie: "I loved it, it rocked."

Teresa sings Mascara - Killing Heidi. "Being in group 3 and then the wildcard I haven't had a chance to go home and see how people's perceptions of me have changed, seeing me on TV. The audience factor excites me. It's what I'm used to, it'll make all the difference. I like the rocky genre better than the pop."

  • Jackie: "I love it, I really do."
  • Frankie: "I'm not sure about that song choice, you do take risks."
  • Paul: "You won't be going home for a while, great choice of song, you look fantastic, well done!"

P.S. Here's my thoughts on the show.

*is a can opener*

I wasn't impressed with any of the singers last night.
I can't believe Jesse attempted Audioslave! I'm always going to go for the rockers (and Nik Eye-wink ) but some voices shouldn't be touched - or butchered - and Chris Cornell is one of them.
Teresa made headlines with her song choice. She killed a Killing Heidi song. Congrats.
The other girls seemed bored. I can't even remember their performances.

I think the only possible silver lining was Rongo. While I didn't think he did well vocally, I liked his stage presence.
And I really don't like Rongo in any shape or form so that's saying something.

I think I've been tainted by watching some real talent on Rockstar INXS. Now that's pure entertainment Laughing out loud

easitman 22 August, 2005 - 2:26pm

except for the clown who couldn't do the queen number!

Get out of my car!!

I think if NZ Idol borrowed the Rockstar INXS stage and backing band, NZ Idol would become a lot more interesting! But I know what you mean! Smiling

Mintymoments 22 August, 2005 - 1:25pm

This is a hard competition whereas last year we could see who was going first (Filipo) coz it was obvious, performance and personality wise. I think we all know who's going home...but then again who was more shocked in Heat 2 when there were a lot of surprises? I think tonight could be the same. You think this person wasn't good enough but then again your favourite could go tonight!!!! VOTE PEOPLE!!!!!

idoltery 22 August, 2005 - 11:33am

Just a note... performance and voice wise this top 10 seems altogether better than Michael and Ben did generally by the end of this time on idol... so thank heavens for that!  I forsee good things ahead for all of them.

easitman 22 August, 2005 - 11:38am

for your sake i hope so cause none of the performances actually stood out(or up).

but that's my opinion!

idoltery 22 August, 2005 - 10:26am

Top 3: Ashley (1 vote) Nik (1 vote) Teresa (2 votes).  What was so bad about Niks performance?

Bottom 3: Frank, Rongo, Shelley

Going home: Shelley.

Get out of my car!!

I thought it was a good show. I loved Jesse and Rosita ... I might have to vote for Steven, Nik, Jesse and Rosita now Sad

Rongo came across as a talentless hack in the vocal department, but he gave a good 'performance' for the camera.

idoltery 22 August, 2005 - 11:34am

I agree... he can perform but his voice is way lacking.

HA! The professionals at TVNZ kill the show in the first 7 minutes... what a bunch of idiots. How are they going to come back now since they cut frankie off mid sentence?
