Wildcards - Performance Show

Submitted by alcatel on 14 August, 2005 - 8:08pm.

Dom welcomes us and says first up he asks how the judges picked those 8. Frankie thought they were the best of those that didn't make through. Paul says two people really missed out. Jackie wants to see 100% attitude and for the contestants to say hey NZ, here's what you're missing out on and why you were wrong. We get a bit of a recap of those 8 contestants' last performances.

First up is Saelyn singing All Cried Out - Allure. She's wearing a funky black and red outfit.. but I'm distracted by the stripey armbands which remind me of Where's Wally. She wants to do something a little more modern this time. She wants to do something she's proud of this time. She says she's unique and a little bit different but hopefully that's what the public wants. She's not bad but I can't help but remember the original version in my head and I like that more. It's rather boring by the end.

  • Frankie: You have an individual sense of fashion and a style of singing which I like.
  • Jackie: Hey Saelyn, look it's such a pleasure to see you again. I'm thrilled, I love to listen to you sing. You feel slightly uncomfortable to be here.
  • Paul: You've stood out from the start. You so deserve to be in this competition.

Next up is Kevin singing Dance With My Father - Luther Vandross. Kevin didn't think he'd get to come back for the Wildcard show and is stoked to have a second chance. The judges hammered him on the night and wants to come back with a roar, even bigger, even better. He still sounds theatrical to me...but he's better than last time because I'm not annoyed at the song.

  • Frankie: I think you sang that very well, lots of Luther Vandross in there though. I wanted you to give us something special that we enjoyed, your personality, your macho, your difference in style in this competition.
  • Jackie: I think you played it wrong strategically.
  • Paul: We want to see more of you, it was paint by numbers for me. No difference from your first group of 8 performance for me.

Maselina sings Brown Eyes - Destiny's Child. She's gutted she didn't get through, she's proud of how far she's come and her wildcard call means a lot to her. She wants to get that last spot. By the comments in the chatroom, people's opinions are mixed.

  • Frankie: I don't think you did quite climb that mountain, it was a little too high for you. The song just wasn't quite there for you. That's my opinion.
  • Jackie: I love where you go, I love that you are not scared by a very scary song like that.
  • Paul: You sang that so passion-felt, well done. Congratulations.

Teresa sings Burn - Tina Arena. Teresa was a little bit shocked not to get through and she wants to try her best again this week. She was blown away by what the judges said. She looks identical to her last performance, complete with hand movements.

  • Jackie: Teresa I am a big fan, you have a level of subtley.. (she has tears in her eyes!) You're such a sensitive musician and I want to hear more, I really do.
  • Paul: New Zealand, what were you thinking? You're so fantastic, you should definitely go through to the Top 10 and if you don't, you're going to have a real career.
  • Frankie:  The public have got to get it right.

Lissel sings "Hit 'Em Up Style - Blu Cantrell". Lissel says she learnt that it's unpredictable but in the end it's up to the public. Hopefully I'll be able to give them what they want this time. Ooh no stud!! She wants to do something more funky, more upbeat. The music just doesn't work well for me at all.

  • Frankie: We believed you should have got through. You give such great expressions facially, you really do have an individual spirit.
  • Jackie: You've got so much flavour, you're so fruity I'm scared. You've got something going all called style and thank you for bringing it to this competition.
  • Paul: You've definitely got something going on, I'm not sure if the song was strong enough to get you through.

Clark sings "Ordinary People - John Legend". I'm cracking up over the silliness in the chatroom more than listening to him sing.

  • Frankie: You've done yourself proud in this competition.
  • Jackie: Another great song choice by you. Stevie Wonder sound to your voice. I'm not so convinced about your performance style. You're very young, I don't know if you're NZ Idol this year.
  • Paul: You're a bit of a dark horse. Congratulations, well done buddy.

Marcel sings "Your Body Is A Wonderland - John Mayer".

  • Frankie: I'm not sure if it will get you through, we'll leave it up to the public.
  • Jackie: Marcel you saucy wench you! That is a total chick flick of a song to choose. Really suits your style.
  • Paul: You stick to a style, the public need to see a different side of you.

Malia sings "Stranded - Lutricia McNeal". Malia thinks Group 3 was full of Idol love and positivity. She wants to seize the day with her second chance. She's better this week than last time but I'm still feeling like none of them really blew me away this week and I'm not feeling like voting.

  • Frankie: I enjoy your expression, the way you sing a song. You remind me of Dionne Warwick. You have a similar style, it warms me up, makes me feel good.
  • Jackie: 75,000% more relaxed this time. You played your natural game, good on you.
  • Paul: It's about having fun, and it also is a lot of hard work. You've done a great job tonight, well done.

Get out of my car!!

Spot on review dude!

Except I thought Saelyn looked funky in a 'White Stripes' kind of way ... colour co-ordination is always a good thing for a girl Smiling

Kevin achieved the level of 'karaoke-sad', and should be banished to his room to do PS2 Singstar for the rest of his life.

Teresa did do the exact same movements as last time! Maybe if she goes through she should break out 'the funky chicken' or a Michael Jackson 'crotch grab', even a 'Lord Of The Dance' routine midway through a song ... anything but those 'Tai Chi' moves again *shudder*

Disagree TC.  I think they were all better than last year's top 10.  At least they can all sing!

I don't care if they can all sing. This is a television show. If they are boring to watch then they may as well have entered radio idol.

BRYAN/BRYAN WON!! XD

Totally agree. Maselina was aaammmazing!

balmac 14 August, 2005 - 9:58pm

teresa was still the standout for my money.

That had to be one of the most average performance shows I've ever seen. Talk about booooring! It's like they're all afraid to do good. They had better pull finger once the top ten starts or it's gonna make the next nine weeks seem like an eternity!

What's the craic?!

I'm SO glad I wasn't the only one that was not that impressed by last night's show ... I was sitting there, thinking to myself, oh gosh, not ANOTHER ballad!  I mean, I'm all for ballad-style usually, but 10 out of 10 contestants, one after another, makes it pretty boring, as TC as just said ...

Give us something to vote for, Top Ten!!!

easitman 15 August, 2005 - 9:57am

I'm going to have to agree with TC here.

Even though the vocals were good, the performances overall were a bit flat.

Maybe a suggestion to the producers would be to do away with the current 2 piece backups and have the full backing as in the top 10 format, or have both.

Vocally some of those last night deserve to be in the top 10 then those already there but that's show business.

Join the Becks Fan Club - today :D

I agree, I watched it on video at 9pm and i found myself fastforwarding some performances, I have never done that before on an idol show

ahmad 15 August, 2005 - 2:45pm

We did the same (until Teresa's performace - we were gutted after last week).

shib7 14 August, 2005 - 9:41pm

Hmm well my opinions definitely changed afta watching the whole show. Saelyn, Lissel,  Maselina I think are definitely out, although I do think they're far more talented than Frank, Shelley, Steve, Ashley who are already in the top 10. I think in general the wildcard contestants are much much much better than our top 10 atm. Most likely to get the wildcard is Teresa. Marcel and Malia are in with a chance. I think Kevin is the most deserving, but I don't think he'll get voted through. I think our Top 10 sux! Keshia, Nik and Rongo are the only ones that rate at the moment. Please give us a good wildcard!!!!!!

shib7 14 August, 2005 - 9:11pm

I don't think anyones going to beat Kevin vocally tonight. That was bloody brilliant. The judges I think are really tough on him, he chose a softer song which showed off his voice and I think that was the right movie. He is definitely the only one out of this group that has the potential to take out the title. I hated him before but now I think hes the real deal. Definitely going to get my vote!
