Was it simply the huge family/hometown fanbase Rongo had?
Or was there something about Theresa that meant people just didn't warm to her?
I wonder what other stuff Theresa would sing if she had got into the top ten...
I think it was her song that made her performance more than anything. I wonder how versatile she is.
Perhaps subconsciously everyone else thought that as well.

The problem with NZ being so small is that communities matter in the vote, much more than in much larger population bases like Aussie or the US. If you have a whole big community or group rooting for you, you're going to do well.
Big surprise last night: Rongo gets in and Teresa is consigned to the *wildcards! Looking at the comments many including myself are surprised that she did not automatically go through to the top 10. While this may 'suck' to a lot of us, 'at the end of the day' it was still a 'legit' result under the existing 'NZ Idol' system of voting. However as others have already noted perhaps the real problem lays within the system of voting (for the selection of the Top 10).
Here, having just 1 vote to cast forces everyone to select the 'best' performer they think should go through to the next round. Clearly Rongo and Nik have already built up a strong following. Yet based upon her performance on Sunday, Teresa impressed many as "deserving to go through to the Top 10" including probably many from the respective camps of Rongo and Nik. However with only 1 vote to cast, people made sure that their no.1 contender was nominated. A No.2 such as Teresa therefore missed out.
A rational outcome? Yes. Fair under the 'rules'? Yes. Fair? No!
Solution? For the selection of the Top 10 (only) allow people to vote for a 'top 3' for the night. This will allow people to not only vote for their no.1 contender but also allow them to select performers whom they'd also like to remain in the competition. As we know from last year's Top 10 competition, the Top 10 is a fickle environment e.g. the rapid demise of Robin; a contender who came in with a large fanbase of support. So perhaps a change in the voting system might allow 'talent' a better chance to prove itself against 'popularity'.
BTW: Nik has both.
The voting system is a crock. We shouldn't have to pay 99c PER VOTE, and be able to vote more than once at all. I said to my wife last night I would stop watching NZ Idol if Teresa didn't get through to the Top 10. I'm not sure if I'll carry through (probably not), but I won't be in a good mood for the rest of the season.
Teresa has an amazing voice, and Sunday's performance was incredible. This is a SINGING competition after all (well actually CORRECTION, this is a "who wants to pay the most to see their favourite go through popularity contest").
Its no point in saying how disapointing it was that Teresa didnt get in. Her fans should've voted more. TERESAS fans should have dug a bit deeper into their pockets. Mohaka, Raupunga, Wairoa, Mahia and every other little town in our area helped to vote for Rongo and thats why he got in. SIMPLE AS THAT!! YIhaaaaaaaaaaaaa GO RONGO!!!!!!!
So he got through because he had a bigger fan base? even though Teresa was the better singer? Where's the fairness in that?
Yes he got through because he has a bigger fan base. Thats the whole point - more people voted for Rongo than for Teresa, therefore has more fans. Just because the judges think she is great doesn't mean that she will appeal to the voting public, and it's the public's opinions which count. I'm sure that Teresa's family and friends were voting for her as well. So maybe it's not fair, and maybe Teresa was better in YOUR opinion, and deserved to be in the top 10, but according to the people who voted, they thought Rongo should be there. Life goes on.
Just to be nit-picky, we can't conclude that "more people voted for Rongo than for Teresa" and that he "has more fans".
All we know is that more votes were cast for Rongo.
Has anyone else thought that maybe, in dissing [somewhat] popular performers, the judges are jepardising the chances of their favourites? :s
I mean, last week, they told Shelley she was 'going home', then she got through and Lissel missed out, then this week they went on about Rongo's song choice and how they wanted him to 'move on from the audition room', so he got through and Theresa missed out.
It was a pity Theresa didn't make it, but I'm still glad Rongo got through. Very suprised, but sooooo happy!
Rosita sang the same song in the top 24 as her audition and no one pointed that out.

Wow, what a shocker. WHen it was down to Rongo and Teresa I was sooooooooooo sure Rongo was going home, and kinda wasn't paying attention when they said the last name, and then Rongo's name was said and I was like "WHAT??" As much as I love Rongo, I sooo thought Teresa was a sure thing!
