So..what are your favourites??
Have you watched any musicals live? My mum watched Les Miserables live in Singapore. *jealous* Apart from Oklahoma! (School production), I haven't seen any musicals live.
I loove musicals!
(Lion King's coming to Australia! ^_^)
I can't think of anymore. ;_; So, who else loves killing the songs from musicals?

....
Have I ever mentioned how beautiful the Les Mis soundtrack is? How can songs be so meaningful? :'( I'm listening to the soundtrack and my eyes are watering ... :'( It might be party caused by nostalgia, as I haven't seen it in aaagges and it was almost tradition for me to watch it several times a year - but gosh.
:'(
Come to my show, ow!
What what: Deck the Mall, a Christmas musical
When: Saturday November 25th, matinee 2:30PM, evening performance 6:30PM
Where: The Street, 9 Hania Street, Mt. Victoria
Why: Because I'm in it. In the choir, yes, but I also dance and have a few lines. Oh, the production's on because they're fundraising for a Filipino community center
Who: I'm in it! And a bunch of other Filipinos. And, hilariously (in terms of accent contrast), a random Kiwi guy. Oh, you should come
How: Five bucks for under twelves/students, forgot how much everyone else is. I'm useful
I am totally digging Brooklyn the Musical!
Diana DeGarmo singing Once Upon A Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK7fIhPX1lw which i think is amazing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jiYxheuS4A the original Brooklyn singing the same song. Eden Espinosa has also played the part of Elphaba a number of times including right now at the Gershwin Theatre
I reckon Rush is the best New Zealand musical since Rocky Horror. I saw the Gore and Queenstown amateur productions and they were spectacular. It's easy to knock a home grown musical but even without the gimmicky technology of the overseas shows Rush is a powerful story with great music. I hope it is done again I'll be first in line for a ticket.
Jessie tok me to Beauty and the Beast on Friday as a surprise birthday present!
Was pretty cool, Lumiere was great so was Le Fou and Gaston. Beauty was okay, the Beast was cool I want his hair XD
I felt sorry for the guys dressed as spoons :s
Wicked is on the West End! Idina Menzel is Elphaba again, some Ozzy unknown (Helen Dallimore) is Galinda, the guy in Coyote Ugly is Fiyero, and Professor Sprout is Madam Morrible
Wiki:
My mate went. Heres his review thing from his blog -
I first got Wicked - The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch Of The West (the novel by Gregory Maguire) as a gift for Christmas 1999. Now this wasn't the best time of my life healthwise as I was being treated for cancer and a lot of the themes in the book seemed very relevant to me - love, life, death, fate, choices... somehow the book really touched me and got me through some tough times. I've read it several times since and still find it incredibly clever, topical, an allegory for the world today, witty and just plain engrossing. The musical of course is pretty much the same as the book although it takes some liberties with the story. Madame Morrible, Dr Dillamond, Fiyero and even Elphaba have different endings to their stories on the stage, but in context it still works and is equally fascinating.
One of the main themes of the musical is what is the true nature of evil? Is someone born evil or is wickedness thrust upon them? Certainly Elphaba (the wicked witch) seems to have been a victim of circumstance and manipulation for most of her life as she tries to help others more needy than her - in this case Animals who can speak being treated like cattle. This leads to her being labelled Wicked by the wizard and its a title she then chooses to live up to, each decision and spell she casts having consequences she can't imagine. Is she wicked? It would seem not - she's a pawn in a bigger game, and when her faith in the wizard is misguided all she has ever believed in crumbles around her and we begin to see why she makes the choices she does. She truly believes she is going to make the world a better place.
Choice and consequence is another theme in the musical - Glinda the good witch chooses a different path from Elphaba but isn't happy with the outcome of her choice and ends up as much a victim as Elphaba. Yet Glinda realises she is unhappy with her choices and still plays up to the life she has, before redemption is at hand towards the end of the play. Fiyero - initially the lover of Glinda makes a choice to help Elphaba one day and we see some great character development in him. He changes from someone who claims not to worry about the past - its the here and now thats important ("i'm deeply shallow") to being passionate about a cause and another person. Adam Garcia is great in the role and more than a little foxy. Each choice made by the characters has repercussions for themselves and others - its when they realise this and learn from it that they start to change for the better and perform acts that seem selfless. Yet, as elphaba herself says are these acts truly inspired by good or do people want others to see them as good??
Friendship and love play a vital role. Elphaba and Glinda become firm friends and have this amazing platonic love affair where despite their differences, they both have this profound influence on each other. Fiyero and Elphaba become friends then lovers and again its the type of friendship that is life altering and makes you want to be a better person. In reality those friendships are rare - i've had a couple in my lifetime and while one didn't end well, it still influenced me and made me part of the person i am today. I was lucky enough to marry the other...
Oh gosh, i could just write so much more. There is a lot to love about this production. Sly wizard of oz film references, witty dialogue, a dynamite cast, etc. My favourite song Defying Gravity which i have loved for a long time was incredible live, i swear i was tingling from head to toe... I may come back and edit this post later but for now I need to lie down and rest and try to capture the memories from this story come to life
Adam Garcia.

I LOVEE musicals. I really enjoyed performing Annie and Little Shop of Horrors in high school. Saw Chicago on broadway which was BRILLANT... absolutely incredible. Loved Phantom of the Opera... didn't like Les Mis and Jesus Christ Superstar - enjoy some acting rather than the story line totally in songs.
I do recommend going to see Beauty and the Beast on the North Shore. Season started on Saturday night. It was brillant. Really disney like, but very exciting. Some amazing actors and singers! Especially the candlestick and Gastons side kick. They received a standing ovation which was very well deserved.
Definately go see it!
I'm in this Filipino-organized musical in November as a fundraiser for a Filipino Community Hall (you know, the Indians have one, why don't we type thing). Deck the Malls. It's extremely cheesey. But I'm rather proud of being the only one able to hold the long note in one of the songs so far.
Phantomb, I meant to ask - how is Faust going?! (or has it gone
) LOL
Nope, not gone yet.
We're due to Faust it up this coming Saturday - it's gonna be a kick-ass show.
PNBHS/GHS 2007 Musical (now that the maestro, Mr. Chris Burton, is back) is confirmed to be...
COPACABANA.
Oh joy. I'm going to love this one.
I heard Hamilton's Fraser High School is doing High School Musical?. . . . .. . . .bad choice? ehhh!!
My cousin goes to Fraser High...I'll ask him. Sounds interesting. In fact, revising for Drama yesterday, me and a friend (Tim Shirriffs is his name, oh) were discussing how cool it would be to do High School Musical onstage...gahur.
They are. XD I'm so jealous.
I've just come home from the opening night of Beauty and the Beast!!
It was pretty good, they had a few sound issues...and a couple of missed lines and wrong notes, but I enjoyed it. The costumes were fabulous and the special effects amazing!! It was sooooooo Disney (ie. the never ending high pitched voice of Belle), but that isn't always a bad thing!! The best scene was DEFINITELY hands down 'Be my guest!'
Luminere and Le Fou stole the show in my opinion. =D
So...if all of you have some free time on your hands and a couple of bucks, seeing this musical is a good night out!
Oliver!
I went to see "Oliver' in Palmy a couple of weeks ago. Good production. American boy played Oliver. He was very good, and didn't sound American, but talked with a 'proper' English accent. Trouble was with some of the rest of the cast, the Cockney accent was overdone so making some hard to understand.
Too funny, Loyal - my sister went with two of her children to see Oliver in Palmy a couple of weeks ago too! LOL You might have been sitting next to them and not realised - hee hee!
My school is doing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat for our major production next year.
There's only allowed to be 14 dancers and a small cast. We had over 100 people involved in Footloose last year (which was fricken awesome by the way).
Something tells me it's just not gonna be as fun this time though. I don't even know if I'll bother auditioning.
Oh, and on another note, I watched 42nd Street (on dvd) last weekend for the first time in years. The dancing and camerawork is quite extravagant, but the dialogue is somewhat lacking: "Pat could you hand me my bag please" "Which one?" "That one" "Here you go" "Thank you" LOL
I hope all you Auckland Idolbloggers are going to come and see Beauty & The Beast at the Bruce Mason Centre. Season is from September 9th to 23rd, and I am in the orchestra!
NZ Idol's very own Becks Wright was down to the final two to play "Belle", but just missed out to Susan Edwards. Lucky she didn't get it, because if they had cast her she would have to pull out for Idol!!
It's going to be a stunning show, with professional sets and costumes (designed by Weta workshop).

My lastyears music teacher is playing the trumpet in that I think :S
And who would that be?
Ms Rogers XD
I think her first name is Naomi?
Would it be kinda sad if I went and saw it even though I've seen the Dunedin one?? :|
I'm seeing it on Saturday! (Opening night yey!)
I forgot to post about my school show this year ...
Cabaret. It was awesome!! ^-^
*tiddledeeteedee* Two ladies ... xD
It's weird when you watch a musical only once but you remember all the songs and they get stuck in your head for the rest of the year.
*loves musicals*
was that by onslow college??
Takapuna Grammar School. :regan:
No, Takapuna XD
OMG OMG OMG OMG! I have fallen in love with Avenue Q.
Avenue Q is a Broadway musical. It opened off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in March 2003 (where it won that season's Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical), and it has been on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre since July 31, 2003. It has risqué songs about racism, Internet porn, and the difficulties of life, and all but three characters are portrayed by puppets. It surprisingly won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Book of a Musical, defeating the much bigger-scale, front-runner musical of the season, Wicked.
SQUEEEE
Avenue Q was awesome!
It is just so brilliant seeing it live, and the cast are all so amazing talented. And I got to shake Nicky's hand!!! Nicky is the one who sings "If you were gay", which is a favourite song of mine.
OMG you lucky thing
I wish I lived on Avenue Q... ^_^
I'm seeing Avenue Q tonight. In less than 7 hours!!!!
Oh yeah... Starshone... did I mention that I saw WICKED on Friday. It was incredible!!! Everything I was hoping for and more.
I am soooooooooooooo loving my broadway trip
ZOMG WICKED! [BOPS]
OMG! I miss you SO much! And then you go rub it in that you're on BROADWAY!
rah moooooo- you lucky thing!
xo
I went to see my old school's version of Les Miserables last night....because it requires such a strong male company, this was only the third time its been staged by a school in New Zealand. I went along thinking that it was going to be terrible (I've seen the professional version) and I was blown away. I couldn't believe that they had so many amazing male voices - the girls are usually great anyway, but to have the lead guys all with such amazing talent was so awesome. It was really long, but man was it good. It's my favourite musical too and I was impressed!
For the Wellingtonians here, Samuel Marsden Collegiate School is putting on The Sound of Music as their school production, and I must say it's pretty damn fantastic! Although Captain Von Trapp and Maria were both kind of meh, Maria was I think outsung by the Abess. :S But hey, the kids are adorable. And two of my friends comprise the entire brass section of the orchestra
I twas gonna go to that! But it's sold out and I sort of can't be bothered, lol. I know Liesl! She used to go to our school
This is what girls should be aiming to sing.
Ace this one and you'll win every competition around.
Tina Arena's Music Video for "Live for the one I love" from the musical "Notre Dame de Paris"
I'm going to see my school production; The Buddy Holly Story tonight and I can't wait!
OMG! Beauty and The Beast was AMAZING!
I LOVED IT! And Mr Phantomb- I have fallen in love with the beast
The costumes, the set, everything- WOW! Weta did such a great job designing everything, YAY THE BEAST! I'll never look at Russell Dixon the same again XD, he is an incredible man (yay Gaston!) < 3
But girls- come look at this guy. My beast...
Greg MacLeod
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG *dies*
Greg MacLeod eh?
It would appear the cast's are different in each production.
Yeah
I knew nearly everyone in the Dunedin cast (oh the shame :$)
Russell Dixon is the only one touring with the musical (and Gladys Hope is in 3 out of the 4)
We're watching some Andrew Lloyd-Webber DVD and I managed to peg the dance Antonio Banderas is doing with some random as the rumba. I feel proud.
[slightly off-topic]
OT?
Had you talked about Banderas in Desperado....that would've been OT
Carrie - The Musical
Opened on Broadway in 1988 but closed after only 5 performances making it the biggest flop in Broadway history.
How could it go so wrong? With no cast recording, very few have lived to tell the tale.....until now.
Yes, thanks to the power of the internet and the generosity of savvy users, we can now catch a glimpse of the horror that was Carrie: The Musical"
OMG OMG OMG OMG! I'm going to see Beauty and The Beast on sunday afternoon

We got brilliant seats and YAY i can't WAIT
*hugs musicals thread*
Aw I'm so jealous! I SOOO want to go, but I'm incredibly broke
Hope you have heaps of fun you lucky thing.
