After watching Pop's Ultimate Star, It just made me think. Is there ANY talent in NZ?
I mean, look at the NZer's that are releasing music. THEY ALL SUCK.
I honestly wish NZ could do better..but I guess........oh I don't know

Im glad PUS actually exist or i'll be just sitting back watching CSI or some other random American crap
I think more NZ on Air money should go to shows such as PUS format rather than Shorty street rubbish
I hope the Govt will Privatise TVNZ, you watch Shorty dissappear lol to expensive
Agreed Chev and also the Judges picked the 5 with talent last night - Ben, Rosita, Nik, Emily and Jo. Emily and Jo are new faces to this sort of thing so we need to get a 'feel' for them I think, but going from the Idol shows that Ben, Rosita and Nik have been in, I agree with their choices there wholeheartedly for TOP 5. I rest my case on the topic 'No Talent in NZ' c'mon where do they get that from, it's an insult to them ALL actually.
Was surprised, though, to see Matt in the BOTTOM four they picked, didn't help that his throat was playing up for him that night. The others, though, I could see Camillia in there, Steve, and, again, surprised that David was, I mean he is doing blimming well for an actor trying to 'crack' it in the music industry. Wonder where he learnt the beat boxing from - the mind rests on the thought Luke Whaanga - after all he lives in that area and with them free to do their own thing between shows unlike Idol - Idol House lockdown from what I heard - not sure if true or not - they could well be getting 'outside' help.
Their acapella was 'gold' in my view. I was a bit taken aback at the way Kim Willoughby laughed about it as I was amazed with how they all pulled together and pulled it off.
People on here, and Throng, have mentioned, too, that hearing it 'live' is way different to on TV so is that where some of the 'false' voting comes in do you think when they picked the wrong ones on the Idol shows?
The Judges looked shocked too, as I mentioned to Ben, when congratulating him on last night's performance, on his Bebo page just before, when public vote put Nik and Rosita in the bottom two. There was a brief camera pan to the Judges and they looked totally gobsmacked. That's going to be a toughie for them on Wednesday. I wonder if it's possible to have a 'no brainer' and they both stay?
Glad you enjoyed your night Chev, what did YOU think of the acapella 'live'?
Well, as for the 'live', in this instance, found it very hard to actually hear the singing. Band very loud and sometimes hard to pick out from the female singers from backing singers. But maybe that's just where I was sitting, don't know.
But yes, did agree with top 5 - surprised to see Joe in there, but she's a great personality, and singer and has become one of my favourites.
And firefox - Matt wasn't in the bottom 4!
Wouldn't say Emily and Joe are new to this sort of thing. Emily after all was 2nd in Australian Idol and Joe in similar competition to be in Truebliss! But I suppose Emily is a new face to us.
But definately showing there is talent here in NZ! Going to be very hard to pick who should be going home! So long as it's not Rosita for a loooong time!
Judges, Idolblog, Frong just have to 'bite the bullet' and accept Majority of New Zealanders are voting who they think are best plain &Simple! W've all heard the "so&so couldnt sing bla bla bla yar yar yar" but sorry ther singers just didnt stand up majority wise. It tells me New Zealanders are just simply NOT interested in excellent no mistakes performers hahaha
There is going to be those who will forever be in denial and wont accept reality/ majority but they can live in denial untill the cows come home, they wont make a didly squat difference to the mass of voters
acapella was great live.
Sadly, I'm going to have to disagree with you on your first point, Chevy, about who the majority of New Zealanders are voting for ... Going on the bottom two last night, I would say the majority of New Zealanders are voting for who they like the look of, or whether or not someone's a good actor
It doesn't look like it's anything to do with who's the best singer, unfortunately ... and I was so mad last night about the fact that either Nik or Rosita wasn't going to be there again, that I couldn't get to sleep till after midnight last night
That's right - it does depend on who people actually like! I'd like to think people do vote for someone because they are good at singing too, but as we've seen on Idol, that doesn't always happen.
Mind you, there's some there that probably are good singers, I don't partulularly like them, so wouldn't dream of voting for them, however good they may sing one particular week.
Having someone who can sing well and is also a well liked person makes for a top pop star though. So hopefully the person with the right requirements will win in the end!
But Rosita really should be there at the end! Maybe I should vote for 2 people and not just the one!
No, I think you should just keep spending your money on Ben
Thought you would say the acapella was great live so that answers my question, not MUCH difference between live and at home watching.
What was it like meeting Ben? Did he come across as everyone says he does, very humble and very Christian?
I'm not the only one that thinks he has a slight Tongan accent then. Not bad for a deafie (me). That could well be the plus that helps with his singing too. The slight accent makes him an 'interesting' as the Judges put it, unique singer.
Was he easy to talk to?
Ben and Matt were mobbed by crazed fans. I had very little time to detect any humble Christian stuff but what really impressed me was they were actually out there among their fans signing autographs, photoshoots etc. I didnt see any other Contestants out there
doing that except for David WP who made a brief appearance before the show started taking photos with some Islanders girls -they love him to bits lol
that is absolutely great that Matt, Ben and DWP gave their time their for fans. I bet they get sick of it sometimes aye
Good on them!
Does make a big difference. Always notice that about Ben - only wish I had realised this time! Would have loved to just say hello or wave!
That's part of the reason I guess that his fans are so loyal to him. Because he has time for them and remembers them. Will do the same for Matt if he makes time for his fans and shows he appreciates them.
totally true Loyal!
i find Ben way more active and good spirited, he is on bebo and replys to me 90% of the time. I understand he's real busy
100%
Saw who started this - the most negative member of Idolblog I'm sure, so not even going to bother to reply to top comment. Well - other than to say this.
But will reply to Matty and agree with much of what you say! Though do think Ben is a outstanding singer not appreciated enough!
Hmm, well, Ben does have X-factor, no doubt. His voice is very good but not outstanding, technically, ...he's definitely the best guy singer on PUS anyways.
Good to hear you say that Matty.
I've always loved listing to his voice, right back to when he sang 'Back at One' - well that's why I became a supporter of his in the first place, and my opinion has never changed.
You're right Tyrique. We have very few good established singers here, and as Pops Ultimate Star has shown, the better ones have actually come from NZ Idol, say what you will about it.
The only established New Zealand artist I like is Brooke Fraser. Her songs are brilliant, her voice is not fantastic but it's more than adequate for what she writes, and she has international appeal. She should really be getting more international attention.
Camillia and Ben are probably the best female and male singers currently well known to the NZ public (even if that's not saying a heck of a lot in the case of Ben). Rosita is fantastic too. It's tragic that our music industry is not allowing them to live up to their great potential.
Emily, of course, did the smart thing and moved across the ditch where the music industry actually gives a damn about local pop artists. Good for her.
I really think there is more great talent in New Zealand, I just think that the repressive local music industry and the tall poppy syndrome are not allowing the best of it to emerge.
This is New Zealand, the land of third rate rock and hiphop. Pop is the best selling genre of music, but the industry is happy to let overseas artists do the selling here. They can't be bothered with local artists. It's just too much work, too much effort.
Third rate rock? What about Crowded House, Shihad, The Datsuns ... hello?
Yep, all third rate, in my opinion. Except Crowded House...at least they wrote some good songs that were covered better by other people.
False Start.
The Black Seeds, Breaks Co-op, FFD, Trinity Roots
Can you sing better?
