Just my 2c before the show starts - it's going to be hilarious if all the hype in the ads about a contestant going is about Victor - we had that info up before the ads started playing on TV. We'll soon find out.
Dom reminds us what happened last week with the final auditions.
We get to see the guys arriving at Auckland airport (see photos) and jump into the Idol cars.
Freaky, they're staying in the same motel as last time.
Paul greets them with a "reality check": "Welcome to the experience which will change someone's life in this room. Take this experience and learn from it. If you're here for a joke, pack your bags and go home." Ok, that was a DISAPPOINTING edit from TVNZ - scandal? Saga? Meh.
Paul tells the others that Victor has pulled out - he's a shy guy. Paul said he didn't have the stamina. Heh, so yep, we were right.
Dom explains how it works - 10 groups of 6, they step forward and sing individually. The judges decide who stays and who goes.
Group 1
Marcel is up first singing "Isn't she lovely" - the same as his audition song.
Carlie wants so badly to be the Idol, even though she just scraped through to the Top 60. She sings the song "Colors of the Wind - Pocahontas".
Rosita, who we know does make the Top 24, sings "Ain't no mountain high enough". She's got an amazing voice.
Ugh, we hear them repeat "passion for music" over and over as their reasons for wanting to be the Idol.
Georgina sings then Rachael then Francis.
Paul says that it's time to go:
- Carlie
- Francis
- Rachael
Group 2
Masleina sings "I will survive". Kylie sings next but she's disappointed with how she did. Jamie mucks up his lyrics singing "Drops of Jupiter". Marino sung "Love is in the air".
Frankie says that it's time to go:
- Kylie
- ?
- ?
Group 3
Rongo sang "Dancing in the streets". ? Nikki sings "Flying without wings". Sera sings "Lady Marmalade" but she's worried about her performance. Malia sings "Band of Gold".
Jackie says that it's time to go:
- Sera
One guy says he's at the end of his bus pass and needs the money for next year so that's why he should be the idol. Jesse jokes he's a well rounded contestant.
Group 4
Sally forgets her words and it looks like she'll go home! Shelley sings "I wanna dance with somebody", Steven sings "You'd better be home soon". Lance sings "Flying without wings".
Paul says some of them are pissing around!
Jackie says that it's time to go:
- Sally
- ?
- ?
Frankie is unimpressed with the groups so far - he had hoped that they were better than last year and is pretty angry about it. "So pull your head in and start concentrating on what you have to achieve today, otherwise see you later alligator."
Group 5
Ruth sings "", Pip sings "", Jesse sings "", Kevin sings "Get outta my dreams" and makes Frankie smile.
Frankie says that it's time to go:
- ?
- ?
Group 6
Peter sings "Two princes", Litia sings "Don't leave me this way", Teresa sings "", Motene sings "", Letitia sings "", Mathew (Matty J!) sings "".
Jackie says they all made it through!
Group 7
Saelyn sings "", Nik sings "".
They all made it through!
We don't get to see any more now but they've been divided into girl and guy groups to sing "Stand by me" and "Lean on me".
It's night time and the groups rehearse in the motel.
Day 2
The groups perform for the judges their songs and twelve more will go home today.
Herb, Daniel and Jamie are the first group up with their routine. Where is the guitar? It's crappy background music. Jamie is awful. It was a very average performance. Frankie had some issues with their timing. Jackie said the start was shaky but they managed to get out of their ditch. Paul didn't like their performance, it was dead set (LOL!) boring.
Who is going home?
- Herb
Marcel, Lance and Tipene are up next. Frankie enjoyed it - especially their harmonies. Paul thought Tipene was out of his depth.
Who is going home?
- Tipene
Peter, Clark, Debor (?) are up next but Debor is missing! Dun, dun dun! He got stuck in traffic and that's why he's late. They get a massive cheer from the audience and Frankie says it's the best performance of the day, bar none. 9/10 on the exactness of the harmonies. Jackie genuinely applauds their effort. Paul says they look great and congratulates them.
Jackie loves Marino, Nik and Matty J - she purrs!
Through to Day 3: Daniel, Jamie, Marcel, Lance, Rick, Rongo, Steven, Jesse, Peter, Clark, Debor, Matty J, Marino, Nik, Frank, Kevin and Nikki.
Tomorrow night: the girls perform and then it's day 3 where the Top 24 are chosen.

The guy trios did Stand By Me and the girls did Lean On Me, correct? I'm having fun with the Wiki.
Aw dammit I wish Carlie hadn't done Colours of the Wind again cos she did it for her audtion last year as well and it didn't do her any favours
Deja vu.
I'm sick of Marcel putting his little "Jesus bits" into his songs. First he did it with My Cherie Amour and then he did it with Isn't She Lovely. He can't help but fiddle with the original lyrics to put his godbothering 2 cents in. I hope he doesn't go any further.
I hadn't even noticed. But hes also a fantastic singer, so if he's good enough he deserves to be there. If he makes the top 24 he won't be able to do that anyway.
I like Marcel.
That's how slippery his delivery has been. He'll slip in the odd line so you don't notice - unless you KNOW the lyrics and Stevie Wonder's originals to a tee. You know, you'll be humming along and then suddenly you come across "hang on, this wasn't in the original lyrics". Sly old dog. Never trust a dude in a beanie.
I noticed, but I still like him.
Is Marcel the guy who was in that group who also had a member who was late in the second round of the Top 60 rounds?
Another thing that really annoyed me ... what was it with people not turning up to practice or being late, etc?! Aren't they taking this competition seriously enough?! :( (I didn't notice, but did the two guys that turned up late get through? I think one of them missed out, and good on the judges, but I can't remember about the other one ...)
Yeah but there always is and probably always will be those contestants. Not all of them take it that seriously. What can you do?
There are sometimes those people who don't even practise that much but still manange to get through. - Singing comes that naturally to them -Lucky people!
Yeah - man that'd annoy you aye.
I think he's OK. A bit more vocal training and he'll be up there. I wanna see variety so I guess it's good that he's not an RnBish singer but I hope he won't turn like Ben Lummis.
Yes. The one that wears the beanie all the damn time.
Does he even have hair? LOL.
He sang in the group without his beanie - his hair looked great all stickin up - it must get really cold in the deep south and he prolly feels naked without his on :S
Didnt the aucklanders who got though stay in the motel..they all seemed to be late well two of them/
Maybe they had the option.
What the?! Am I watching DIY Idol?
"We nailed it. We hit the nail through the wood."
"We nailed it through the stage."
"Where was the crogfy? Where was the crogfy?"
There's that guy who won't (can't?) come to the trio rehearsal. Why? I like to think his entire family, friends, neighbours and people he barely knows have come around to his house and are demanding that he tell them every last detail.
"I have to go. I have to rehearse-"
"What was that Fiona like? What's she like in real life?"
Highlight #3: Frankie delivers the verbal smack-down.
"You're gonna have to pull your head in, otherwise, 'See ya later, alligator.' Bye."
Oh My Gosh.... Sally G = Waste of top 60 place... :@
I felt SOOOO annoyed when she "performed" last night on the show :( She wasn't taking the whole thing seriously at all, and so cause she got through, someone who really WANTED to be in the competition missed out :( It's really quite sad how some people muck around and ruin someone else's opportunity ...
Anyway, that's my two cents worth
Yeah, didn't take it seriously. Sucks really, if Victor hadn't gotton through as well, 2 more people who were just as good or better could have had their shot. It's a shame.
eh! i was pissed watching that last night, that girl from chch should have definately got through with wee sal's performance being like that.GRRRRR!!!! there are heaps of peeps with wicked voices who were diddled out of a top 60 place. not cricket folks
Highlight #2: "Music/singing is my passion."
Strangely reminiscent of the recent interview with Katie Holmes where she answered practically every question by saying how much she loves Tom Cruise.
LOL Robyn
That first group weren't much to be proud of for our first lot of top '60' :S hearing them all in a row like that put it into perspective. (Except Rosita). Saw Matty J
Highlight #1: Paul reducing "obviously" into a two-syllable word "obsly".
aw poo, i misssed that i'll have to watch it again
